Description
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 PCGS. More than a century after his design for the double eagle first made its way into circulation, Augustus Saint-Gaudens and his coin design legacy have become seemingly permanent fixtures on American coinage. Its initial quarter-century run (26 years, if one counts the 1933 double eagles) began with numismatic acclaim and ended with frantic saving of choice examples.
As repatriation brought increasingly valuable double eagles out of European bank vaults, appreciation for the artistry of Saint-Gaudens increased even further, and in 1986, the year the United States Mint belatedly entered the international bullion coinage sweepstakes with its .900 fine American Eagles, a low-relief rendition of the familiar image of Liberty graced the gold pieces. The 2009-dated pure gold one-ounce bullion pieces recently unveiled by the Mint are further echoes of his vision, this time as, in the words of a Mint press release, "the ultra high relief coin envisioned, but never fully realized, by renowned sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907."
While the novelty and grandeur of the 2009 Ultra High Relief pieces will prove popular, collectors will still continue to admire the 1907 High Relief double eagles, the first encounter many numismatists have had with the Saint-Gaudens image, not merely as a coin design, but as a work of art. This well-preserved Choice piece shows an extensive wire rim around the obverse, which has generally yellow-gold surfaces that show a distinct peach cast in the fields. Minimally marked for the grade and gorgeous.(Registry values: N7079) (#9135)

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens: as Illustrated by the Phillip H. Morse Collection
By James L. Halperin, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato and Gregory J. Rohan
The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on the extraordinary collection of Phillip H. Morse. When Morse's collection was sold in November 2005 it brought $19.2 million with many records broken for both rare and common coins.
