Description
1896 $1 PR67 Cameo NGC. Commenting on the 1896 proof dollars in his Morgan silver dollar Guide Book (2005, p. 227), David Bowers says: "Good strike. Deep cameo contrast. Some nice ones are around. Whew! Those nasty years of weak striking, beginning in 1888, are over!"
And over the weak strikes were, at least for the Superb Gem Cameo being offered in this lot! The design elements are well brought up, including sharp (though just a tad short of full) delineation in the hair over Liberty's ear. All of the eagle's plumage is bold, including that on the breast. Fantastic field-motif contrast is noted on both sides, as are impeccably preserved and essentially untoned surfaces. All in all, great technical quality and aesthetic eye appeal. Census: 18 in 67 Cameo, 6 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N4719) (#87331)
