Description
1846/5-O $10 MS62 NGC. Although undesignated as such on the NGC holder, this is actually an unrecognized 1846/5-O eagle, and as such it is a great rarity in this condition. Indeed, both the 1846-O and the 1846/5-O are great rarities in the MS62 grade of the present coin: A quick perusal through our Permanent Auction Archives reveals that the finest example of either variant we have previously offered is an AU55, and the finest certified 1846/5-O we have offered is an XF45 PCGS coin from our 2005 St. Louis CSNS Signature Auction #372 (5/2005, lot 8754).
As mentioned, both the overdate and nonoverdate varieties are extremely rare in Mint State, and in fact Extremely Fine examples are very rare. While some numismatists question whether it is a 5 or something else under the 6, there is clearly "something there," and this is a popular variety whose fame has been increased by its listing in the Guide Book.
A comparison of the overdate and nonoverdate varieties reveals several key differences that are useful in attribution: Most obvious is the ball of an apparent 5 in the lower loop of the 6, and that underdigit portion is frosted. The area under the top loop of the 6 is also frosted. There are also remnants of an underdigit beneath the 4 in the date, and the enclosed area within the triangle of the 4 is also frosted. The downstroke of the 4 is quite thick, and the thick, long serif on the cross-stroke of the 4 meets the right serif of the downstroke, enclosing an oval area that is also frosted.
This piece reveals considerable prooflike luster when turned under a light, and while there is some light field chatter on both sides, there are no singular abrasions. The color is a delightful medium yellow-gold, and the strike is close to full. PCGS has certified one each of the 1846-O and 1846/5-O in MS64, with the next highest some AU55s. NGC appears not to certify the overdate, but the finest 1846-Os are a single MS63 Prooflike and one MS62 (8/08). This overdate coin appears clearly to be well within the Condition Census.(Registry values: N7079) (#8596)
