Description
1898 $2 1/2 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. Proof gold coins have held a place of honor in many of the greatest collections to come across the auction block in the past several decades. Names such as Bass, Pittman, and Trompeter are forever attached to the spectacular specimens that they had the pleasure of owning. Each of those renowned numismatists possessed an outstanding proof 1898 quarter eagle, and the present piece is certain to be treasured by the next great collector.
From an original mintage of just 165 specimens, it is estimated that between 80 and 100 examples still exist--a truly miraculous survival rate. Unfortunately, as Garrett and Guth (2006) are quick to point out, many of those pieces are impaired or otherwise less-than-stellar. Of course, a few virtually perfect pieces do exist, but they seldom come to market. Ultra Cameo coins are even rarer, and NGC reports that just 37 submissions have received that designation. While they have certified 10 pieces finer than this example (one of which is a spectacular PR69), only one of those has received the coveted star designation (8/08). The PR67 Ultra Cameo grade indicates that this piece is truly among the cream of the crop.
Frosted yellow-gold patina covers the devices, which show stunning cameo contrast against the bottomless, deeply mirrored fields. A minuscule mark between the date and star 13 is noted for future pedigree purposes. The rest of the surfaces are virtually immaculate, although a few small milky patches are visible on the reverse. The full strike further adds to the appeal of this resplendent Superb Gem. This piece is undoubtedly one of the finest known. A discerning collector trying to assemble one of the next important gold collections should not miss the opportunity to acquire this magnificent specimen.(Registry values: P2) (#97924)
