Description
1806 1C S-270, B-1, R.1, MS64 Brown NGC. On February 15, 2008, Heritage auctioned the Walter Husak Collection, one of the finest holdings of early large cents ever assembled. His Sheldon-270 was certified by PCGS as AU50. The present example is eight grades finer, and is the single finest certified by NGC. It has little company in Mint State, where NGC has certified just seven pieces between MS61 and MS63. None have been certified as Red or Red and Brown. PCGS has certified six Brown Mint State coins, the single finest as MS64, along with a solitary MS66 Red and Brown. Thus, the present coin ranks among the finest certified, and is the highest graded by NGC.
The 1806 is one of only three years in the large cent series represented by just one variety. (The 1804 and 1809 are the other two dates). S-270 is plentiful in well worn condition, but better grade examples are very scarce and are subject to strong date demand. The present lustrous near-Gem would be the centerpiece of most specialized collections. It has dazzling cartwheel luster, and the toning is a pleasing light golden-brown with glimpses of aqua and rose. The strike is crisp, although the curl near the date lacks complete detail. There are no visible marks, further ensuring the eye appeal. An important acquisition for the connoisseur who demands the best. EAC 60+.(Registry values: N7079) (#1513)
