Heritage to Offer A Rare
A 1909 Indian Cent Struck Over a 1906 Barber Dime!
DALLAS, TEXAS: A classic overstruck dual-denomination error that easily qualifies as one of the most important and exciting error coins that Heritage Auction Galleries has handled will be offered in their September 2006 Long Beach Signature Auction.
"We cannot imagine a more spectacular Indian cent error," enthused Heritage President Greg Rohan, "with the possible exception of the 1862 obverse die cap offered in our Denver Platinum Night auction. On this error, nearly all of the designs of both coins are visible, including the 1906 dime-date at about 4 o'clock on the obverse. Approximately 45 degrees of rotation show between the two strikes. On the reverse, ONE CENT and ONE DIME are both clearly visible."
"We assume that a 1906 Barber dime was produced in the normal course of minting," continued Rohan, "but then became lodged in one of the large tote bins at the Philadelphia Mint. Three years later, this bin was filled with cent planchets, the previously struck dime was knocked loose, and eventually found its way into the press run for Indian cents. While one is tempted to say 'How else could a 1906 dime find its way to the cent press in 1909,' we cannot conjecture what some bored Mint employee might have done accidentally or purposefully. Whenever we consider the possibilities, I am reminded of a former employee on a tour of the mint some two decades ago who flipped a well-circulated three-cent nickel into a dime bin as he walked by. Strange things happen in life, and this coin is the proof."
The error has been certified by NGC and graded MS65. The frosty surfaces have bright silver luster with just a trace of gold toning.
Heritage Auction Galleries will present this intriguing error coin in their upcoming September 13-16, 2006 Signature Auction, the official auction of the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo at the Long Beach Convention Center, 100 South Pine Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90802.
