90303Indenture Between Frances Sands and Robert Dickey June 2, 1809, New York City, transferring ownership of property located between Lumber Street (now Trinity Place) and Greenwich Street. The vellum document has two pages and the integral paper map. The largest sheet is 25.75" x 22". Signed by Frances Sands, the document is in excellent condition.
Greenwich Street was Manhattan's most desirable neighborhood in the post-Revolutionary War era for the city's social elite and wealthy merchant class. The fashionable 3-1/2-story Federal style houses at the southern end of the western side of Greenwich Street became known as "Millionaire's Row."
In June and August 1809, merchant Robert Dickey acquired three parcels with frontage on lower Greenwich Street for $11,017 from their owners: Nathaniel Prime, one of New York's wealthiest men, its first private banker, and founder and head of the banking firm of Prime, Ward & King, and his wife, nee Cornelia Sands; Frances Sands, sister of Cornelia; and John and Catherine Ellison of Orange County. Comfort Sands, a merchant, Revolutionary War patriot, and founder of the Bank of New York, had transferred two of the lots to his daughters in 1796. Dickey entered into mortgage agreements with the Primes and Sands. By November 1809, when a court action occurred that resulted in a quitclaim in Dickey's favor, two 3-story houses were under construction at Nos. 69 and 71 (later 65 and 67) Greenwich Street, along with two stables and coach house and a storehouse along Lumber Street, separated from the houses by courtyards.
On June 28, 2005, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated the Robert and Anne Dickey House, 67 Greenwich Street (aka 28-30 Trinity Place), a city landmark.

90304Indenture Between William & Martha Beekman and John Cannon, January, 25 1732, New York City, transferring ownership of a 60 foot wide strip of property running from Queen's Street to the "old dock." The vellum document is one page 26.5" x 13.5". Signed by William Beekman, Martha Beekman (her mark), and Rip van Dam. The document is in excellent condition. Wilhelmus Hendrickse Beekman (1623-1707) was the founder of the Beekman family in New York City. He came from Holland in 1647, on the same ship as Peter Stuyvesant, the last governor of New Netherlands. His close acquaintance to 'Governor' Stuyvesant helped him get two lucrative offices. He was first made resident treasurer of the Dutch West India Company and later appointed vice-director of a colony of Swedes on the Delaware River. After the surrender of new Netherlands to the English, he moved to Esopus, where stayed until 1670. Returning to New York City, William Beekman then bought the property upon which the large Beekman fortune was founded. This property was a large farm, formerly owned by Thomas Hall and stretched along the East River along what later became Beekman Street. The property was later extended to the South to incorporate Cripple Bush, henceforth known as Beekman Swamp and eventually a valuable piece of New York City real estate. Along with the farm, William Beekman acquired a brewery, which he continued to operate with great success. He expanded this business in and around New York, becoming one of the city's largest wholesale merchants. As such he soon owned ships and invested in ship building, bills-of-exchange and other mercantile assets, the typical interests of a large colonial trader. By 1695, he was counted among the richest New York merchants. In true Dutch tradition and against British law, he split his real estate evenly among his surviving children and offspring of a pre-deceased daughter. Each of them notably inherited a 60 feet wide (and probably over 100 feet long) tract of what later became New York's prime real estate property. Very interesting and researchable!Sold for: $131.45.

Autographs
90321Louis Philippe Autograph Note Signed "Louis Philippe" in exile. One page, 4.75" x 5.25", dated June 12, 1850, S. Leonards. The note is addressed to the banking firm of Coutts & Co, "I inclose [sic] the weekly draft for payment of our expenditure here. You will observe that it is drawn by the Queen, & that it must be imputed [sic] on her account." A very good note with a small tear at the left bottom corner. Louis-Philippe (1773 - 1850) was king of the French from 1830 to 1848 in what was known as the July Monarchy. He was the last king to rule France. He was known as Philippe Égalité for his liberal leanings. In his first exile (1793-1815) after the first French Revolution, Louis-Philippe visited the United States for four years, staying in Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston, where he taught French for a time and lived in lodgings over what is now the Union Oyster House, Boston's oldest restaurant. After the abdication of Napoleon and the restoration of the monarchy under his cousin King Louis XVIII, Louis-Philippe returned to live in France, claiming sympathy with the citizens of the country. He openly sided with the liberal opposition under Louis XVIII and then even more so under the reign of Louis's brother, King Charles X. In 1830, the July Revolution overthrew the régime of Charles X. The Chamber of Deputies proclaimed Louis-Philippe, who for eleven days had been acting as regent, as the new French king. The new monarch took the style of "King of the French," a constitutional innovation known as popular monarchy which linked the monarch's title to a people, not to a state. Louis-Philippe repudiated the legitimist theory of the divine right of kings. He ruled in an unpretentious fashion, avoiding the pomp and lavish spending of his predecessors. Despite this outward appearance of simplicity, his support came from the wealthy middle classes. At first, he was much loved and called the "Citizen King" and the "bourgeois monarch," but his popularity suffered as his government was perceived as increasingly conservative and monarchical. An economic crisis in 1847 led to the citizens of France revolting against their king again. He disguised himself and fled Paris. Riding in an ordinary cab under the name of "Mr. Smith," he escaped to England. There he lived in exile until his death on August 26,1850, only 82 days after he wrote this note.Sold for: $49.00.

In 1793, Caroline moved with her family to France during the French Revolution. There she fell in love with Joachim Murat, one of her brother's generals, and they married on January 20, 1800. Ambitious and power-hungry, she became grand duchess of Berg and Cleves on March 15, 1806. She became queen consort of Naples on August 1, 1808. Scholars consistently rank him as one of the two or three worst American presidents; although he claimed secession was illegal, he claimed going to war to stop it was also illegal. This inaction laid the grounds for the American Civil War. Fine.Sold for: $262.90.

90409Richard Mentor Johnson, United States Vice-President, Autograph - clipped signature "Rd. M. Johnson" mounted with a copy of a drawing. Overall size, 12" x 15.75". Richard Johnson (1780-1850), from Beargrass, Kentucky, was commissioned a colonel of Kentucky Volunteers and commanded a regiment in the War of 1812. He was credited by some with personally killing Tecumseh at the Battle of Thames. Despite the doubtful accuracy of this claim, Johnson would later use it in successful campaigns for Congress. Johnson never married, but had a long-term relationship with Julia Chinn, a family slave. Together, they had two daughters. Johnson was entirely open about the relationship, treating Chinn as if she was his wife, which greatly offended many of his fellow Southerners. In 1836, Johnson was selected as the Democratic Party's candidate for vice president, as running mate to Martin Van Buren. Johnson's background as a Westerner and Indian fighter made him a good balance to Van Buren, an elegant Easterner. The Democrats won the election, but the 23 electors from Virginia refused to vote for Johnson due to his relationship with Julia Chinn. With exactly 147 of the 294 electoral votes, Johnson was one vote short of a majority. In such a case, the 12th Amendment gives the Senate the authority to decide the issue. The Senate voted to elect Johnson on February 8, 1837, the only time the Senate ever elected the vice president. In 1840, the Democratic Party convention voted not to renominate Johnson, instead choosing to make no nomination. Van Buren was renominated and lost the election.Sold for: $49.00.

Signed "Holles Newcastle". 7.5" x 12". Thomas Pelham was the eldest son of the 1st Baron Pelham and a nephew of the 1st Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. His uncle died in 1711, and his father the next year, both leaving their large estates to him. When he came of age in 1714, Lord Pelham was one of the greatest landowners in the kingdom. Pelham sustained the Whigs at Queen Anne's death, and had much influence in convincing Londoners to accept King George I. He was created Earl of Clare, 1715 Duke of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1715, and a Knight of the Garter in 1718.

In 1717 he first held political office as lord chamberlain of the household, and in 1724 was chosen by Sir Robert Walpole to be secretary of state for the Southern Department. As the senior secretary of state, Newcastle was responsible for Southern England, Wales, Ireland, and the American colonies. This office he held continuously for thirty years (1724-1754), until he succeeded his brother as prime minister (1754-1756). However, as prime minister he was blamed for Great Britain's poor efforts in the French and Indian War and in November 1756 he was replaced by the Duke of Devonshire. In July 1757 Newcastle again became prime minister, serving until May 1762 when the new King George III maneuvered his former tutor, Lord Bute, into the premiership. Sold for: $143.40.
