Long
Beach to Host HWCA Ancient Coin Auction
Heritage
World Coin Auctions will be holding a fabulous Signature sale of
ancient coins next week in Long Beach. Offerings include a diverse
selection of Greek gold, silver and bronze coins; an in-depth
grouping of silver and bronze coins from Judaea; a fine run from
the ancient east; a full selection of Roman gold, silver, and
bronze coins; a solid collection of silver pieces from Eastern
Rulers; an impressive sampling of Roman Provincial coins; a run of
Byzantine gold, silver and bronze coins; and approximately 200
group lots. Many outstanding examples of coinages from these
ancient worlds can be found in this sale.
From the Greek era, the auction highlights Celtic Britain gold
staters; a rare variety of a Leontini lion tetradrachm; a Bithynia,
Calchedon tetradrachm with bull standing left; two attractive
Macedonian gold staters; and coins from many of the city-states of
Greece. From Judaea, highlights include important shekels from the
Jewish and Kochbar wars, and a fine selection of minor coins of the
region. Out of the East, from rulers in Persis and Parthia, are an
excellent drachm from Manchihr III of Persis and a tetradrachm from
Mithradates II of the Parthian Kingdom. And from the provinces, we
offer a huge extremely fine bronze coin of Caracalla, from
Perinthus in Thrace, that would enhance the finest collection.
The Roman selections are particularly strong. A solid
representation of cast bronze and silver denarii from the Roman
Republic includes an interesting cast sextons shell, several
fabulous Julius Caesar denarii, and a denarius from Marc Antony and
Cleopatra. The Roman Imperial coinage begins with important aurei
and denarii of the 12 Caesars, highlighted by aurei from Otho and
Vitellius; a high grade example of the elusive denarius of Antonia;
a rare denarius from the Civil Wars; and a fabulous XF sestertius
from Claudius. Second century offerings include several XF
sestertii, with two wonderful examples from the rule of Hadrian; a
superb Julia Titi AR denarius; and a rare Matida denarius in
collectable condition. Later offerings include AR denarii from
Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, and a stunning AR
denarius from Clodius Albinus. One major highlight from this period
is a fantastic and rare denarius of Gordian II. But the two "stars"
of this sale are the rarely offered gold coins of Uranius Antoninus
(in choice condition, and a fabulous addition to any serious
collection) and a 2 Solidus Medallion of Aelia Eudocia (probably
unique, and would be the star of the most important of Roman
collections). The Byzantine offerings include a run of attractive,
collectable gold and silver coins.
The auction concludes with more than 200 group lots of Greek,
Roman, and Byzantine coins offered for the collector and dealer
interested in finding real treasures. Many of the lots have all of
the coins identified, but attributed or not, each will undoubtedly
bring pleasure to the purchaser.
The HWCA Signature Sale will take place in Long Beach on May 29 and
30, with Ancient Coins to be sold on May 29. The HWCA catalog is
now available online at www.HeritageCoin.com. To order, click

Found Treasures: 1921
Peace Dollar
By Stewart Huckaby
At the suggestion of renowned numismatist Farran Zerbe, the
American Numismatic Association began a movement in 1920 to mint a
circulating coin to commemorate peace, specifically the end of "The
War to End All Wars". This movement gathered steam until in May
1921 a bill was introduced in Congress to change the design of the
Silver Dollar. Although the bill was never voted upon, it turned
out that a vote was not necessary for a design change, and hasty
preparations were made at the end of 1921 to make the new coin
type.
To illustrate the haste in which this design change took place, the
design competition was announced on November 23, 1921, and the
first coins of the new Peace Design were produced on December 26th
of the same year. Compare that with the lengthy process used in the
current Statehood Quarter series.
The winner of the design competition was Anthony De Francisci, who
had earlier worked on the Maine Centennial Half Dollar. The word
"PEACE" was inscribed at the bottom of a mountain peak on the
reverse of the coin. 1921 dollars were struck in high relief, but
this initially led to a very short die lifespan. To counteract
this, striking pressure was reduced, but this caused most 1921
Peace Dollars to have weak details in the center. The relief was
lowered in early 1922.
1921 Peace Dollars are prized, and bring a premium over most coins
of the type in any grade. A few proofs were made as well, and exist
in both Matte and Satin finishes. The coin pictured is a Matte
proof, graded Proof-65, and has finer details finer than are found
in even the finest circulation coins of the date.
Website Tips: Adding
pictures to My Collection
Although Heritage does not keep files of coins for individuals, the
"My Collection" feature allows you to link your coin automatically
to an image either on the internet or on a local computer.
To link an image to your coin, go to its listing within "My
Collection". Click on the link corresponding to the coin.
This will bring up a menu that will allow you to edit specific
information corresponding to your coin.
Near the bottom of this menu are two boxes entitled "Link to
picture" and "Link to Picture 2". "Link to Picture" is the path to
any image of your choice to accurately depict this item. There are
two methods to get your picture to appear:
1. The image is on your computer. If the image you want to display
is on your computer, type the path to that image (example: C:\My
Documents\Coin Images\1909SVDB.jpg). Please note: the image will
only appear on that computer. If you view your collection from
another computer, and that image is not present in the same place,
it will not display.
2. The image is on the internet. If the image you want to display
is hosted somewhere on the internet, type in the full URL (web site
address) to that image. Example:
http://www.mydomain.ext/myimage.jpg.
Once you enter the correct path to the image(s) you want to display
and save this page, when you return you will see the image(s)
appear. If you do not see the image(s), please verify that you have
the correct path to the image.
American
History As Seen Through Currency
A book by Dr. Edward A. Dauer and Joanne C. Dauer
With the
annual June Memphis paper money show rapidly approaching,
collectors will have more in store than the normal array of
fabulous currency on the bourse floor and favorite meeting and
eating spots. This year's show will afford collectors their first
look at a colorful new reference that includes some of the finest
quality photographs of U.S. currency ever to be seen. In their
recently released book American History As Seen Through
Currency, Dr. Edward Dauer and Joanne Dauer take a novel
approach in exploring both the historical context of circulating
U.S. currency and the history depicted in its designs. Profusely
illustrated, this tome combines masterful photography and
interesting historical insights into the wide array of U.S. Federal
currency issued from the Civil War era until the Great Depression.
Using many notes from their own reference collection, the Dauers
explore the historical relationships between the currency designs
and the actual circulating period. Interesting historical sidebars,
combined with a unique flair for personal insight, come together to
make this book a surprisingly refreshing look at both American
history and collectible U.S. currency.

| Is It Time To Sell? |
2003 July Baltimore, MD. Signature Sale
MORE eager floor bidders, gathering for the Maryland State and ANA
conventions. What a great opportunity to sell your coins, at one of
the most important auctions of the year. The ranks of Middle
Atlantic collectors will swell by the thousands of numismatists
coming to the Maryland State Convention and then to the ANA's
World's Fair of Money. You will directly benefit from their
attendance, from the worldwide community of dealers, from strong
mail and fax bids from Heritage's world-class mailing list of
150,000 numismatists, and even from live telephone and Internet
bidders at the sale.
MORE Internet bidders than any competitor, now more than 80,000
registered at our website. Remember, you don't have to choose
between those dedicated floor bidders in Baltimore and the 80,000+
bidder/members on our award-winning website. For three weeks before
the first lot is hammered at the Baltimore auction, Internet, mail,
fax, TeleBid, and even email bidders will have been competing
against each other around the clock for your coins and currency,
with every bid pushing prices on your lots higher and higher. The
highest bidders on our electronic "book" go head to head,
bid-to-bid against the floor and live Internet bidders. With all
this demand, prices can only go up, and that means more dollars in
your pocket.
MORE excitement created by our highly effective marketing program.
We send direct email links to every want list customer matching
your coins - that's $100 million+ of dedicated demand from our My
WantList clients. Plus we publicize interesting and important lots
to all of our email clients for weeks before the auction. Each
bidder receives an automatic email when outbid, prompting a higher
bid. Remember, the sooner we receive your coins, the sooner we can
begin marketing them to the entire world.
Posting on MORE websites, including www.HeritageCoin.com,
the world's most important numismatic website. Heritage places our
electronic catalog on multiple collectibles websites, to make sure
that we reach collectors everywhere.
MORE records set on the types of material that you own in this hot
market. The current market is red hot for fresh coins and currency,
Heritage auction results are running 40% ahead of last year's
record-setting pace! We focus demand, maximizing competition to
maximize your prices realized - like no other auction house
can.
MORE demonstrated leadership from our management team - in place
for three decades. When you consign your coins and currency to
Heritage, you know who is 'in charge' - and their track record for
achieving record prices realized. Other auction houses have had
leaders depart, or even ownership changes; not Heritage. Steve Ivy
has been a coin dealer since 1964, Jim Halperin since 1967, and
Greg Rohan since 1972. Under their guidance, Heritage has presented
more than five hundred successful sales over more than a quarter
century.
MORE important numismatic items to attract worldwide attention -
$4+ million already on hand. Heritage is already hard at work on
our Baltimore auction, advertising key consignments and coins,
generating pre-sale demand. We begin intensive work as soon as we
receive your consignment. Your coins will sell alongside great
consignments like The John Dabbert Collection, The Gilbert Clark
Collection, The Stephen Stokely Collection, The Estate of Ron
Julian, The V.A.M. Everest Collection, and The Morris Silverman
Collection-Part II. Whether you are selling extras from your
collections, or a complete collection built over decades,
Heritage's Baltimore 2003 auction is for you.
To make this sale perfect, we need one MORE thing: Your
consignment! You have the opportunity to make numismatist history
and profit from the hot market at this important event, but you
need to act now! Give Heritage the opportunity to serve you. Quite
frankly, no other auction company delivers 50% of the demand that
Heritage does. Why settle for a distant 2nd - or even 3rd, for that
matter? Include your coins and currency in the most exciting
numismatic sale of the year: Heritage's July 2003 Baltimore
Signature Sale. Call Heritage's Consignor Hotline at 1-800-US COINS
