We are proud to announce the addition of another valued member to our World Coin Auctions team. "I am pleased to be working once again with Scott, and I am sure Heritage will benefit greatly from his expertise within the world coin field," noted Heritage's World Coin Auction Consignment Coordinator, Warren Tucker.

Scott has been collecting coins since he was 10 years old, starting with US coins, then Swedish coins, and moving on to collecting Islamic coins. He attended the University of California, Berkeley, from 1967-1971, and spent his junior year at the University of Lund, Sweden. He worked in Bjarne Ahlstrom's coin shop in Stockholm that summer, and graduated in 1971 with Phi Beta Kappa honors in World History and Scandinavian Languages.

Shortly thereafter, he accepted an offer from Worldwide Coins in Atlanta to work in their foreign department with Warren Tucker and Louis Collins. In 1972, he formed his own company, and later that year created Cordry & Craig International with Freeman Craig and moved to San Francisco. The partnership flourished for 3 years and when he established himself within his area of expertise, Scandinavian coins and Islamic coins and currency. In 1977, he returned to San Diego and has been running his mail order business ever since.

He is 53 and was born in San Diego. He has two children, Chris 18 and Juliette 13. He is a member of the ANA, NI, ONS, AINA and was a member of IAPN for 15 years while traveling extensively in Europe. He is a contributor to virtually all of the Krause standard catalogs, and to the Friedberg gold catalog. He is currently recognized as the leading expert in modern Islamic coins and banknotes, but has dealt with virtually every post -Renaissance coinage.

Found Treasures: The 1804 Dollar
by Stewart Huckaby

In 1834, when the United States wanted to make diplomatic agreements with several Asian countries, it was decided to make presentation proof sets of current circulating coins. These sets contained mostly coins dated 1834, but the silver dollar and eagle had not been made since 1804, so it was decided to make new versions of these coins with the 1804 date. This did not create a problem with the 1804 Eagle, but although mint records stated that 19,570 silver dollars were made in 1804, these coins were dated 1803.

It became necessary to create new dies for the 1804 dollar. 1804 dollars differ from other coins of the Draped Bust/Heraldic Eagle type in large part because of their borders, which contain beads rather than denticles (teeth).

Two 1834 proof sets containing 1804 dollars were presented to foreign heads of state, the Sultan of Oman and the King of Siam. The King of Siam set remains intact except for the half dime, and is sometimes displayed at larger coin shows. Other dollars were sold to collectors. Restrikes were made in the 1850's, and again sold to collectors. These can be distinguished by the reverse die.

Sixteen 1804 dollars are known to exist, along with uncounted numbers of fakes. These coins, while not quite as rare as some other pieces, command immense prices when offered for auction because of their popularity. Record prices are $4.14 million for the original Childs specimen graded Proof-68, and $875,000 for the restrike Adams specimen graded Proof-58.

Heritage Auctions Leads Coin & Currency Auction Market Again With a Record $76.6 Million in Sales
We would like to thank you for being part of a banner year at Heritage. We are excited about the growth in our hobby, industry and passion. Here is a summary of sales from last year. Heritage Numismatic Auctions (HNAI) and Currency Auctions of America (CAA) posted $76,664,096.08 in coin and currency auction net sales for 2002, making it the leading numismatic auctioneer, by a wide margin, for the second year in a row. $76.6 million is significantly above last year's total, and represents the highest numismatic auction sales by any company in any year.

All numbers include Heritage's 15% Buyers Premium, but do not include direct private treaty sales. These figures only include those items that actually met reserve and do not include consignor buy-backs.

Heritage was also the #1 collectibles auctioneer in America, with total auction net auction sales of $93,284,938.77. In its first full year of operation, Heritage Comics Auctions posted total auction net sales for calendar 2002 of $17,620,842.69, at least tripling the previous annual comics and related popular culture sales record for any auction firm. Note: Heritage's very first comics auction, in November 2001, realized "only" $960,649.05.
