Finest-Known Nova Eborac Copper to be Offered by Heritage!

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Galleries & Auctioneers (HG&A) will offer the finest-known 1787 Nova Eborac Copper, Seated Right MS63 Brown PCGS, at their official January 3-7, 2006 Florida United Numismatists Signature Auction.

"The exceptionally fine condition of this coin was noted by Charles Bushnell," said Greg Rohan, President of HG&A. "Both obverse and reverse are slightly off center with extra flan on the left portion of each side and some of the lettering cut off on the right side. The surfaces are a lovely medium brown with faint portions of mint red still in evidence in the more protected areas. The striking details are exceptionally strong on each side and there are no detracting abrasions or copper spots in evidence. This is the finest Nova Eborac graded by either of the major services, and in fact the closest coins in grade are three AU55s."

"This coin was struck from the later state of the dies with a significant die break on the reverse at the foot of Liberty, and the cinquefoil in that same area is very weak," Rohan said.

"After the ill-fated Seated Left variant," Rohan continued, "it appears engravers John Bailey and Gilbert Rindell still had not learned how to properly sink relief for striking coinage. This reverse was sunk too deeply, and as a result, the relief is usually softly defined. On this piece, however, it appears extra care was taken in its manufacture and the reverse is well brought up, except on the uppermost portions of the drapery."
