$50 Gold Certificate That "Cannot Exist" to be Offered by Heritage!

Dallas, Texas: A one-of-a-kind 1882 $50 Gold Certificate, which, if Treasury records are accepted as accurate, should not even exist, will soon be auctioned by Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries.

"This note first came to light at a Milwaukee coin show in 1989," said Dustin Johnston, Consignment Director for Heritage, "and caused a sensation among currency collectors worldwide. Prior to the discovery of this note, it was believed that all Rosecrans and Huston-signed $50 Gold Certificates, such as this one, bear a Large Brown Seal, as opposed to the Small Red Scalloped Seal seen here. In fact, according to Treasury records, as researched by Doug Murray, the printing of Rosecrans-Huston signed notes was completed during January 1891 and the use of the Small Red Scalloped Seal did not begin until June of 1891. The fact that this note exists with a Small Red Scalloped Seal is a true anomaly, since the Rosecrans-Huston tandem signatures appeared on notes printed during their joint tenure, between May 1889 and April 1891. Therefore, if one accepts the Treasury records as accurate, this note should not exist at all, yet here it is, a unique specimen to spark the interest and curiosity of currency collectors everywhere."

"It's also an interesting point that the Small Red Seal is located at the bottom center of the note - a position that was not used on any other Small Red Seal variety," Johnston said. "The note itself is problem-free, strictly original, and unmolested, as well as being well margined, bright and attractive. Not only is Fr. 1192a unique as a Friedberg number, but it remains, and will likely always remain, unique as a Type."

"In my opinion," Johnston added, "this note is far more important than others which routinely bring six-figure prices. Should this note catch the fancy of two well-heeled bidders, a quarter-million dollar price would not be unreasonable to expect due to its unique status in this field."

Heritage Auction Galleries will offer the Fr. 1192a $50 1882 Gold Certificate CGA Very Fine 35 in their upcoming Signature Auction, to be held April 27-29, 2006 as the official auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society's 2006 Convention, at the Greater Columbus Convention Center, located at 400 North High Street, Columbus, Ohio.
