Double-Cover copy of Green Lantern #1 Hits the Auction Block!
DALLAS, TEXAS: Created by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell in the pages of All-American Comics #16, Green Lantern was a modern-day version of Aladdin, with a magic ring instead of a genii. An instant hit upon his introduction, it wasn't long before the Green Gladiator was awarded his own book.
"As any comic aficionado knows, Green Lantern #1, with its unforgettable Howard Purcell cover, is one of the key books of the Golden Age," said Ed Jaster, Vice-President for Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries. "This was the beginning of a spectacular run for one of the greatest comic characters ever created, a run that has continued unbroken, except for a few years in the 1950s, until the present day."
"The exquisite copy of Green Lantern #1 that we're offering in our upcoming Signature Auction is significant for several reasons," Jaster continued. "First, of course, is its iconic status as the first issue of a long-running and popular title. Second is the fact that, of 36 unrestored copies certified by CGC, there is not a higher graded example in existence. Finally, as if those two points weren't enough, there's the fact that this copy - and only this copy, to the very best of our knowledge - bears an extremely rare double cover. This is a very uncommon binding error in which two covers are accidentally stapled to the book. Double covers even on nondescript issues are considered very rare and collectible. To find one on a book of this magnitude is absolutely unheard of."
"This book will no doubt be one of the stars of our upcoming auction," said Jaster, " as it presents the opportunity for the advanced Golden Age collector to add a truly unique and one-of-a-kind item to his or her collection. The bragging rights that attach to this book are absolutely astronomical."
