Multi-Million Dollar Kutasi Collection to Anchor Heritage's 2007 F.U.N. Auction in Orlando
The Number One Collection of 20th Century American Gold On Both the PCGS and NGC Registry Lists
DALLAS, TEXAS: A multi-million dollar collection of twentieth century gold coins will be auctioned by Heritage Auction Galleries of Dallas at their January 3-6, 2007 official auction of the Florida United Numismatists convention. The auction will be held at the Orange County Convention facility in Orlando. Heritage's auctions at F.U.N. will total more than $50 million; lot descriptions and full-color, enlargeable images will be online at HA.com in mid-December.
"John Kutasi has amassed one of the finest collections of 20th century gold ever assembled," announced Heritage President Greg Rohan, "and Heritage is honored to have been selected to auction it at F.U.N. in our Platinum Night and Signature auctions. These coins reflect the finest traditions of collecting with their extraordinary coupling of rarity and condition."
Their position as the finest masterpieces of the minting art is reflected in their NGC and PCGS Registry rankings:
- #1 All-Time and #1 Current PCGS Registry Set of $10 Indians
- #1 Current and #4 All-Time PCGS Registry Set of Saint-Gaudens $20
- #1 Current and #2 All-Time PCGS Registry Set of Type III Lib $20s
"A Los Angeles native, Mr. Kutasi received his B.S. in Business Administration from USC, and then worked in commodity futures trading. Ultimately, this entrepreneur acquired various business interests in the credit industry, and with financial success came renewed interest in rare coins. A strong believer in gold, Mr. Kutasi began purchasing generic Saints. His interest soon evolved into a deep appreciation for - and the pursuit of - rarer dates in $5 Indians, $10 Indians, and $20 Saints. Through his aggressive buying and constant upgrading, he was able to assemble the magnificent coins we will be presenting in F.U.N. 2007. Mr. Kutasi's achievement will be long remembered by numismatists for whom only the best is good enough," concluded Rohan.
Highlights from The Kutasi Collection
1907 Indian $10 Wire Rim, MS66 PCGS
A wonderful example of the first coin struck of the Saint-Gaudens' designs in 1907: the $10 gold piece.
1907 Indian $10 Rolled Rim, MS67 PCGS
One of the finest known of 50 surviving 1907 Rolled Rim Tens, the second version of the Saint-Gaudens $10 design produced in 1907; none certified finer.
1907 Indian $10 No Motto, MS67 PCGS
One of the finest examples known of the last version of the 1907 gold eagle used for production of coins; only two pieces have been certified finer.
1908-S $10, MS67 PCGS
Specialists know the 1908-S is probably the best produced $10 Indian, and an incomparable beauty in this high grade.
1909-D $10, MS66 PCGS
The attrition rate for 1909-D $10s was very high, with most surviving of minimal Uncirculated quality.
1910-S $10, MS66 PCGS
A superlative example of an extremely desirable emission.
1920-S $10, MS66 PCGS
An exceptional survivor, tied for the second finest known of 126,500 eagles minted at the San Francisco Mint.
1933 $10, MS65 PCGS
An exceptional survivor, tied for the second finest known of 126,500 eagles minted at the San Francisco Mint.
1907 High Relief Roman Numerals $20, Flat Rim, MS65 PCGS
Of all the variations on the initial double eagle design presented to President Roosevelt in December 1906, the High Relief, Flat Rim coins are closest to a golden realization of Saint-Gaudens final design.
1907 Arabic Numerals $20, MS67 PCGS
The present example is among the finest certified by both PCGS and NGC, with none finer at either service.
1908-S $20, MS66 PCGS
The 1908-S, with a mintage of only 22,000 pieces, has the lowest production of any issue in the Saint-Gaudens series except for the Ultra High Relief and High Relief.
1909/8 $20, MS65 PCGS
So far as known, 1909 was the only year that an overdate was produced in the Saint-Gaudens double eagles.
1910 $20, MS66 PCGS
The 1910 is a classic condition rarity in full Gem condition.
1911-S $20, MS67 PCGS
The finest certified 1911-S Twenty, MS67 PCGS.
1912 $20, MS66 PCGS
The 1912 is the only double eagle issue of the year; none were struck at Denver or San Francisco, the first time for a Philadelphia Mint-only twenty since 1886.
1920 $20, MS65 PCGS
The 1920 double eagle in Gem condition is one of the most underrated condition rarities in the entire series, and none have been certified finer. Ex: Eliasberg.
1920-S $20, MS64 PCGS
Most 1920-S $20s were apparently kept in government vaults until the 1930s, when nearly the entire mintage seems to have been melted.
1921 $20, MS64 PCGS
The 1921 is a classic rarity in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, comparable in overall rarity to the 1920-S, but considerably more challenging as a condition rarity above MS60.
1924-D $20, MS65 PCGS
With a population of only five in 65, with only two finer.
1925-D $20, MS66 PCGS
Many of the nearly 3 million double eagles struck in Denver in 1925 were sent to Europe, primarily to Swiss and French banks, as exchange payments, and thus escaped the melting pots of the 1930s.
1931-D $20, MS66 PCGS
