1857 Flying Eagle DDO Discovery Cent To Be Auctioned at Charlotte ANA
Heritage to Present First Auction Appearance!
Dallas TX: The Discovery coin of a new variety of Flying Eagle cent from 1857 will be offered by Heritage Auction Galleries at their Charlotte 2007 ANA Signature Auction, March 15-17, 2007. The new variety has been confirmed by specialist Rick Snow, who stated in a letter accompanying the lot that "it is a new unlisted variety and (I) will list it as S-21 in the updated 1856-1858 attribution guide." The coin shows doubling on the obverse lettering and date that is strongest on the A in STATES. The coin has been certified by PCGS as an MS64.
"It is a delightful surprise to find a new discovery in the Flying Eagle series," enthused Heritage President Greg Rohan. "In fact, it is hard to think of a series that has been studied as extensively and as thoroughly as Flying Eagle Cents, especially given the situation surrounding the 1856 pieces. Rick Snow has been central to this effort, and he has examined tens of thousands of specimens; when he alerts the collector community to a new discovery, you can be sure that specialists will be enthusiastic bidders."
The complete description of the coin, with detailed images, is currently available on the www.HA.com/Coins website, and will soon be available for bidding.
