"The numismatist who assembled The Jackson Hole Collection" noted Heritage President Greg Rohan, "started collecting coins at the age of ten. While he pursued his undergradĀuate and medical degrees, he maintained what he describes as 'numismatic interest at a distance,' following developments such as certification and general market trends. As his medical practice became well-established, he was able to devote more time and financial resources to numismatics, and he chose the Morgan dollars for their fascinating history and aesthetic appeal. Before he began purchasing coins widely, he bought and studied every book on Morgans he could find, and then began a serious contemplation of third-party grading. After educating himself thoroughly on Morgan grading nuances, he began to purchase uncertified coins to test himself through submissions. Only after he felt he had become proficient did he indulge in the majority of his purchases. The quality shows."
"One of the advantages of this approach," concluded Rohan, "was that he looked at all coins with a 'fresh' eye, typically covering the certified grade insert until he had established his own opinion. This approach resulted in several financial bonuses through upgrades or recognizing VAM rarities (his 'common' 1880 Morgan became tied for finest known (MS66) 1880-CC 8/7 Rev. of 1878 VAM-7. His persistence paid off on many such purchases."
