Press Release - March 23, 2007

One-of-a-Kind Barbra Streisand Acetate Demo to be Auctioned by Heritage!

Dallas, TX: It's a dream common to many young singers, one which few actually achieve: to become a professional recording artist, signed to a major label. In 1962, a fledgling nightclub singer, a mere 19 years old, cut an acetate demo at a little audio studio on West 57th Street in New York City called Fine Recording. The acetate, which was sent to several record companies, including Decca, RCA Victor, MGM, and Columbia, would launch the career of one of the century's greatest actors and singers, the legendary Barbra Streisand.

"Streisand is one of the most distinctive, successful performers of our age," said Doug Norwine, Director of Music and Entertainment Auctions for Dallas-based Heritage Auction Galleries. "A winner of multiple Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Golden Globes, Barbra's last concert tour in 2006 broke box-office records, grossing more than $92 million. Her films, from Funny Girl in 1968 to Meet the Fockers in 2004, are some of the most beloved in movie history. Without a doubt, Streisand is an entertainment icon."

"Given her incredible level of success," Norwine continued, "it's often hard to remember that this great artist was once a struggling young singer, pinning all her hopes of success on a demo she recorded in 1962. Privately produced in a very limited quantity - it's believed she only made about 10 copies - the acetate contains two songs, one on each side; 'I Stayed Too Long at the Fair,' by Billy Barnes and Cole Porter's 'Come to the Supermarket (in Old Peking).' It's believed that the copy we're offering in our upcoming auction is the only copy still in existence, as it is common practice for record companies to destroy demos from artists they're not interested in signing."

"Making this acetate even more desirable," Norwine said, "is the fact that it was given directly to the consignor by Streisand herself. The provenance could not be stronger. Realizing the value of this unique treasure, the demo has been played exactly twice, and kept secure in a vault for all these years. In pristine condition, the versions of these songs presented here - Barbra with piano accompaniment - cannot be heard anywhere else. Both songs were eventually included on Streisand's albums - 'Supermarket' was featured on The Barbra Streisand Album, while 'Fair' can be heard on The Second Barbra Streisand Album - but these later versions were recorded with orchestra, making the simple, yet evocative, piano and vocal versions not only unique but historically important."

Norwine continued, "I would invite any fans of Barbra's to visit our website at www.HA.com, where they can hear brief clips of both songs, view enlargeable full-color images of each and every lot in the auction, read our complete and thorough catalog descriptions, and even place their bids from the comfort and convenience of their home or office."

Heritage Auction Galleries will hold their upcoming Music and Entertainment Signature auction on April 14 & 15, 2007, at their headquarters in Dallas, TX.
