Heritage's April Dallas Signature Auction

The Jackson Hole Collection, the Former #1 Morgan Dollar Registry Set, Excels

Dallas, TX: Heritage's April 9-10 Dallas Signature Auction, featuring the Jackson Hole Registry Collection of Morgan Dollars, realized $7,038,140. The final prices realized are expected to reach $8 million after results are posted from Post Auction Buys and the Final Session (formerly titled the OnLine Session). The auction was held by Heritage Auction Galleries at their Dallas world headquarters.

The magnificent Jackson Hole set was previously listed as the #1 PCGS Registry set in several categories, and at the time of auction was ranked the #2 Current and #2 All-Time Finest set on the Registry (Morgan Dollars with Varieties, Circulation Strikes, 1878-1921; Morgan Dollars Date Set, Circulation Strikes 1878-1921). "The numismatist who assembled The Jackson Hole Collection" noted Heritage President Greg Rohan, "chose his Morgan dollars for their aesthetic appeal, and that same eye-appeal obviously extended to a new generation of buyers."

Lot 1: 1878 8TF MS67 PCGS, VAM-14.3, Realized: $46,000

Despite nearly 15 million silver dollars struck at Philadelphia in 1879, Superb examples are seldom seen, with this the sole MS67 and none finer. From The Jackson Hole Collection.

Lot 27: 1881-CC MS68 PCGS, Realized: $48,875
The majority of examples were kept in government vaults, so Mint State representatives are certainly available, but of the millions of coins so stored only a handful can compare to this marvelous Morgan dollar (one of just three pieces certified MS68 by PCGS, with none finer for any Carson City Morgan issue. Lot 42: 1884-S MS63 PCGS, Realized: $31,625

Lot 57: 1888-O Scarface MS63 PCGS, VAM 1B, A Top 100 Variety, Realized: $6,900

Lot 102: 1900-S MS67 Prooflike PCGS, Realized: $48,875

Lot 103: 1901 MS64 PCGS, Realized: $37,375

Lot 116: 1904-S MS67 PCGS, Realized: $32,200

Lot 120: 1895 $1 PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS, Realized: $126,500

Lot 122: 1879 Morgan Half Dollar, Judd-1601, Pollock-1796, High R.6, PR66 PCGS, Realized: $18,400
The obverse is essentially identical to the issued Morgan dollar, although reduced in scale for the half dollar denomination pattern. From The Jackson Hole Collection.

Lot 481: 1792 Half Disme, Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.4, XF Details, Realized: $74,750
As America's first silver coin, and with its strong associations with George Washington, one of the greatest classic rarities in American numismatics.

Lot 642: 1877-S 25C Over Horizontal S MS65 NGC. FS-501, Briggs 4-D, Realized: $3,450
The initial S mintmark was punched into the die horizontally, then corrected with an upright S mintmark. None certified finer (2/07).

Lot 942: 1852 $1 MS62 PCGS, Realized: $57,500
In 1852, the Philadelphia Mint coined just 1,100 circulation strike dollars; only six certified finer (2/07).

Lot 1694: 1880 $4 Flowing Hair, Judd-1657, Pollock-1857, R.6, PR65 NGC, Realized: $316,250
The "Stella" is exceedingly popular among numismatists, especially in Gem.

Lot 1696: 1805 $5 MS64 PCGS, Close Date, Breen-6445, BD-2, R.4, Realized: $46,000
This is the variety with Star 13 firmly embedded in the bust of Liberty; only two certified finer (2/07).

Lot 1699: 1834 $5 Capped Head, Crosslet 4 MS64 NGC. Ex: Freedom Collection. B. I-3, Breen-6500, Bass-3166, BD-2, R.5, Realized: $103,500
The final "old tenor" design type was coined from 1829 through early 1834, with less than 400 coins surviving. Apparently Ex: John W. Haseltine (69th Sale, 6/1883); Garrett Collection; Johns Hopkins University (Bowers and Ruddy, 11/1979), lot 477.

Lot 1811: 1916-S $5 MS66 PCGS, Realized: $63,250
A coin with startlingly well detailed sharpness; none certified finer at either service (2/07).

Lot 1814: 1799 $10 Small Stars Obverse MS63 NGC, Breen-6839, Taraszka-14, BD-2, High R.5, Realized: $41,688
Researchers believe that the 1799 Large Stars varieties were created after the Small Stars punch broke during the creation of a die.

Lot 1883: 1907 $10 Wire Rim MS64 NGC, Realized: $41,400
Many numismatists feel that the 1907 Periods, Wire Rim eagles most perfectly represent Augustus Saint-Gaudens' concept for this coin.

Lot 1976: 1877-CC $20 MS62 PCGS, Realized: $48,875
This date remains rare in Mint State; none have been certified finer.

Lot 2068: 1907 $20 High Relief PR66 NGC, Realized: $83,375
One of Saint-Gaudens' great gifts was to sculpt figures on a heroic scale, and yet imbue them with personality in the most human dimensions.
