Heritage Presents 3400 Lot Central States Currency Auction!
Dallas, TX: Heritage Auction Galleries will present its Spring 2007 Currency auction May 9 - 11, 2007 as the Official Auctioneer of the Central States Numismatic Society Convention in St. Louis, MO. Highlighted in this auction will be the William A. "Bill" Bond Collection of Confederate and Southern States Bonds, the Jacob and Heather Dedman Collection, the Collection of Greg Southward, the Lincoln Collection of Illinois Nationals, and the Rolling Plains Collection of Oklahoma and Texas Nationals. Also to be offered will be major holdings of Colonial Currency, Fractional Currency, Obsolete Notes, Large Size Type and National Bank Notes.
"The Wednesday evening session opens with an unusually broad selection of Continental and Colonial Currency," said Jim Fitzgerald, Director of Currency Auctions for Heritage, "a 200-lot selection of Fractional Currency, a large selection of Confederate and Southern States Bonds and Currency, with many rare Confederate Bonds from the aforementioned Bill Bond Collection, as well as a unique for type Inverted T-59 $10 1863 Confederate Note, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. A highlight within the Military Payment Certificate section features only the second known Series 541 $10 Replacement note, carrying an estimate of $9,000-up."
"Large Size Type Notes are center stage Thursday night with a pair of 1846 United States Loan Bonds, neither of which is pictured in the Hessler reference," Fitzgerald said. "The Type Notes begin with Fr. 1a, which has "for the" handwritten, graded by PCGS as Extremely Fine 45PPQ, most likely the finest known of eight recorded, and carrying an estimate of $100,000-up. Legal Tender highlights include a 1875 $10 Legal graded Very Fine 30 by PMG, with an estimate of $25,000. Silver Certificate highlights include Serial E10 on a Fr. 317 1891 $20, graded Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ by PMG, and the finest graded for this number, carrying an estimate of $20,000. Other rarities include a Fr. 1133bL $1,000 1918 Federal Reserve Note, graded Gem Uncirculated 65 by CGA, and one of only four known for this variety, which carries an estimate of $100,000. Gold Notes include such rarities as a Fr. 1192 $50 1882 in Very Fine, estimated at $60,000."
Fitzgerald continued, "Friday afternoon opens with over 500 lots of Small Size type notes. Federal Reserve Bank Note specialists will enjoy jockeying for the newly discovered $100 Minneapolis Star, which is now one of only three known to exist, graded PMG Very Fine 20, and estimated at $11,000-$14,000. The highlight of the afternoon session will be a 1928 $10,000 note, one of only seven available to the collecting public, graded PMG Extremely Fine 45, and carrying an estimate of $150,000-$200,000. The afternoon session concludes with Error notes. A highlight will be a note with mismatched prefix letters on the Farmers & Merchants National Bank of Fort Branch, IN, which is one of only two National Bank Notes known to exist with this error, estimated at $15,000-$20,000."
"The Friday evening session will wrap up the sale with an offering of 1,200 lots of National Bank Notes, highlighted by the Lincoln Collection of Illinois Nationals," Fitzgerald said, "and the Rolling Plains Collection of Oklahoma and Texas notes. The highlight of the evening will be the recently discovered serial #1 $5 Brown Back from the First NB of Tampa, FL, graded About Uncirculated, and carrying an estimate of $40,000-$60,000."
