Edgar Rice Burroughs Memorabilia Comes to Heritage Auction!
Dallas, TX: The prized and valuable October 1912 issue of The All-Story Magazine, presenting Tarzan's first appearance in any medium, is the highlight of a large selection of Edgar Rice Burroughs material offered by Heritage Auction Galleries in their August 2-4 Comic and Comic Art auction, to be held at Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, MD.
The landmark October 1912 pulp was published a year and a half before the first book edition of Tarzan of the Apes, and there are subtle differences in the text between this first publication and the 1914 book. The copy being auctioned, in GD/VG condition, is from the collection of well-known Burroughs expert Robert B. Zeuschner, the author of the definitive bibliography of Burroughs' work, often interviewed on Burroughs' life and career. His copy of this rare pulp was shown on A&E's Biography some years ago.
"After seeing another copy of this highly prized pulp sell for $59,750, triple the previous record for any pulp magazine, in a 2006 Heritage auction, Dr. Zeuschner chose Heritage to auction his collection of early pulps with Burroughs stories, including All-Story Weekly, Blue Book, Munsey's, Liberty, Amazing Stories, Red Book, and others," said Ed Jaster, Vice President for Heritage.
While the story "Tarzan of the Apes" was presented in its entirety in one issue, most of Burroughs' stories were serialized over multiple issues. At Dr. Zeuschner's request, complete serials are being sold together as single lots. Other highlight lots are "The Warlord Of Mars" (1914) in The All-Story Magazine, featuring Burroughs' first hero John Carter in a story that strongly influenced the genre later known as science fiction, and "At The Earth's Core" in All-Story Weekly, which introduced the lost world of Pellucidar.
In addition to these pulp magazines, the same auction will feature other items of great interest to the Burroughs collector, including:
- The original art for a spectacular 1935 Tarzan Sunday strip by Hal Foster,
- An equally impressive 1940 Tarzan Sunday strip by Burne Hogarth, as well as Tarzan art by Bob Lubbers, John Celardo, and others,
- A signed letter from Burroughs to his daughter Joan,
- Early comic book appearances of Tarzan, including Comics on Parade #1 from 1938,
- Tarzan memorabilia such as rare store signs, posters, and much more.
All of the above will be offered in Heritage's upcoming Vintage Comic and Comic Art auction, to be held August 2-4, 2007, at Geppi's Entertainment Museum in Baltimore, MD, with the Final Session on August 7 online at www.HA.com.
