Heritage offers an important collection of 19th & early-20th century National Bank Notes!
Dallas, Texas: Heritage Numismatic Auctions is selling an important collection of 19th & early-20th century National Bank Notes from Ohio banks at their E-Fair auction, October 8-9 in Columbus. Currency from many cities are highlighted: Arcanum, Brookville, Fostoria, Greenville, Hamilton, Lima, McConnelsville, Oxford, Pitsburg, Sidney, Springfield, Troy, Urbana, and Zanesville, plus 24 others."Our E-Fair auction," noted HNAI Director Bob Korver, "features 50 historic notes from the Gulde Collection of Ohio Nationals. National Bank Notes were issued 1863-1929 by thousands of Federally chartered banks. The notes were first printed by private printing companies, then by the Bureau of Engraving & Printing in Washington, D.C. Each note bears the name, location, and charter number of the locally-owned bank. They remained fully negotiable regardless of the underlying strength of the bank. Most of the notes have been redeemed and destroyed since 1900. Many of these banks went out of business more than a century ago, but their notes are still valid legal tender - assuming someone is foolish enough to spend them instead of selling them to collectors!"
"The National Banks," continued Korver, "could issue currency up to 90% of the par value of U.S. Government Bonds they deposited with the Treasury. Early issues were often hand-signed by local bank officers (usually prominent local citizens), along with printed signatures of the Treasury officials. Not only important pieces of fiscal history, these are also magnificent pieces of art, bearing engraved images from American history: The Pilgrims Landing, Columbus Landing, Ben Franklin Flying his Kite, and even Washington Crossing the Delaware."
Photographs of the remaining notes in the Gulde Collection will be posted on the Heritage website when the catalog is posted on September 23rd.
