May CAA-Heritage Sale to Feature Rarities in All Fields

Dallas, TX -- An outstanding offering of Large and Small Type Notes, two major collections of Obsolete Currency, a massive array of Error Notes, and a tremendous selection of National Bank Notes highlight Currency Auctions of America-Heritage’s two session Spring 2002 auction.

CAA’s Spring 2002 sale will take place in conjunction with and as the official auction of the Seventh Annual Chicago Invitational Paper Money Show at the Hotel Sofitel, 5550 North River Road, Rosemont, Illinois (adjacent to Chicago O’Hare International Airport) on Friday and Saturday evenings, May 17 and 18, 2002.

The more than 3500 lot sale features The Arlie Slabaugh Collection of Obsolete Currency, The Finest Collection Ever Offered of Connecticut Obsolete Notes, the Midwest Collection of Large Size Type Notes and National Bank Notes, the Warren H. Burnside Collection of Large and Small Type Notes, Star Notes, and West Virginia National Bank Notes, and other important properties from more than 130 different consignors.

Friday evening’s session opens with a diverse offering of Continental and Colonial notes and continues with an over 150 lot selection of Fractional Currency. The session continues with a run of Military Payment Certificates, including two straight zeros specimen sets as well as an unprecedented offering of 111 pieces of the hitherto very rare Series 651 50 cent notes. Over 600 lots of Obsolete Currency follow, anchored by the Slabaugh collection and the over 200 lots of Connecticut notes in the massive Connecticut collection going on the block. Offered next are almost 250 lots of Error Notes, including an inverted Hawaii overprint, a $20 1928 Gold Certificate missing its third printing, and a Superb Gem Double Denomination note. The evening concludes with CAA’s largest offering ever of Small Size Type Notes, many coming from the Burnside collection. Highlights are almost too numerous to mention, but include a Gem Crisp Uncirculated 1933 $10 Silver Certificate, Gem $500 and $1000 1928 Gold Certificates, a run of star notes including a gorgeous Gem Crisp Uncirculated $500 1934 Federal Reserve Note from the San Francisco district , a pair of Gem Series 1928 $1000 examples from the Dallas district, Gem Uncirculated 1928 and 1934 $5000 notes, and three $10,000 Federal Reserve Notes.

The Saturday evening session is devoted to Large Size Type and National Bank Notes. Over 500 lots of Large Size Type material will be offered in a section replete with rarities. Two rare Demand Notes, a Fr. 5 from St. Louis and a Fr. 11 from Boston, one of the four known $20 Boston examples, open the action, and they are followed by a Gem Crisp Uncirculated Fr. 151 Rainbow 1869 Legal Tender $50, several high grade and rare Interest Bearing and Compound Interest Treasury Notes, a consecutive pair of Gem Crisp Uncirculated Fr. 334 $50 1891 Silver Certificates, a magnificent Fr. 376 $50 1891 Treasury Note bearing serial number B7, and a Fr. 377 $100 1890 Treasury Note displaying the well known “Watermelon” reverse.

Saturday’s session concludes with an offering of over 800 lots of National Bank Notes. Rarities again abound, starting with a Gem Crisp Uncirculated Fairbanks, Alaska Red Seal. Also to be found are a high grade $5 National Gold Bank Note from Sacramento, a $20 National Gold Bank Note from San Francisco, and an excessively rare First Charter $5 note from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Several uncut sheets and many serial number 1 notes can be found as well. The night ends with the Warren Burnside collection of West Virginia Nationals, highlighted by Mr. Burnside’s unique First National Bank of Sutton $20 Red Seal.
