Heritage and The Mint to Jointly Auction the Nicolas Cage Comic Book Collection

DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) and Jay Parrino’s, The Mint have been selected to jointly auction the valuable comic book collection of Academy Award winning actor, Nicolas Cage. Mr. Cage is the star of such films as Raising Arizona (1987), Honeymoon in Vegas (1992), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), Face/Off (1997), and his new film Adaptation, which will be released December 6th of this year.

After deciding to liquidate his collection, Cage investigated a number of options before selecting Heritage and The Mint.

“We’re excited to be working with The Mint and Mr. Cage,” said John Petty, Director of Auctions for HCA. “With the help of some of the country’s foremost comics dealers, he’s put together a marvelous collection of high-grade, important books.” When asked about the value, Petty explained, “We haven’t yet seen the books, but based on the list we’ve been provided, we’re estimating the collection will easily realize well into seven figures. Of course, we’ll have a much better idea of the actual value once the books have been graded by CGC.”

The comic books are currently being graded and encapsulated at Comics Guaranty LLC (CGC), and will be offered in the joint auction during the weekend of October 11-13, concurrent with the Dallas Comicon. A complete list of the comics and grades will be released as soon as CGC grades the books.

Bill Hughes, The Mint’s comics expert explained “Heritage and The Mint are competitors, but we have an excellent working relationship. So, Mr. Cage’s advisors wisely decided that rather than presenting the comics through just one auctioneer, they could give the collection even more exposure by acquiring the services - and client lists - of the two largest and most active auctioneers in the comic books field.”

Cage was born Nicolas Coppola. Wanting to succeed on his own merits as an actor rather than on the strength of the family name, the young actor changed his last name to Cage, inspired by Luke Cage, Hero for Hire, Nick’s favorite superhero. The rest is Hollywood history.

“There are a number of great books in this collection,” said Petty, “including Action Comics #1, the origin and first appearance of Superman, the Allentown copy of Detective #33, as well as the Mile High copies of All-Star #3, featuring the first Justice Society of America, Adventure Comics #48, the first appearance of Hourman, and Captain America Comics #1. This is a real treasure-trove for any collector of high-quality Golden Age material.”

“Silver Age material is also well-represented,” Petty continued, “with such outstanding books as Amazing Fantasy #15, featuring Spider-Man’s first appearance, Brave and the Bold #28, which introduces the Justice League of America, Fantastic Four #1, Green Lantern #1, and X-Men #1, among others.”

Heritage Comics Auctions and The Mint both specialize in rare, high-grade comic books, as well as vintage comic and animation art, illustration art, movie posters and comics-related collectibles.

Heritage will also hold a Signature Auction featuring comic books, art and vintage movie posters the same weekend.
