The Return of the Stan Lee File Copies!
DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) has received a second consignment of File Copies and related memorabilia from comics legend, Stan Lee.“We offered Stan’s key issues in our last auction,” said HCA Director of Auctions John Petty, “and now we’re pleased to offer a nice assortment of the secondary Marvel keys, including Fantastic Four #4 (the first Silver Age appearance of the Sub-Mariner), #48-50 (the first appearances of Galactus and the Silver Surfer), a run of Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos #1-50, one of two complete runs of Silver Surfer #1-18, and, my personal favorite, a complete run of Not Brand Echh #1-13."
“In addition to the comics,” Petty continued, “there is an assortment of other items, including Stan’s personal bound copies of Bible Tales from 1953 and 1954, which he did with artist Jerry Robinson and his bound copies of Snafu, a humor magazine of which Stan is still quite proud. There are more original Spider-Man newspaper strips, both dailies and Sundays, and several Willie Lumpkin dailies, a strip that Stan did with the late Dan DeCarlo. There are even two busts of Stan done by Nijart International of Los Angeles, which are wonderful likenesses.”
Also being offered is the only known Charles Schulz oil painting. It features Charlie Brown and Snoopy, plus an intricate doghouse adorned with strips of real wood. Stan purchased the piece about 20 years ago at a charity auction hosted by Joan Crawford.
After the first auction of his material, Stan emailed Jim Halperin at Heritage the following humorous note:
“Hi, Jim...
Just wanna thank you. All of a sudden I'm a huge auction fan! Can't wait till the next one. I've got the bug now. I'm looking all over the house for things to auction off. Can't even write any more scripts because I'm wrapping up my computer so I can send it to you! How much can I get for my three dogs-- if I autograph them? Excelsior! -- Stan”
“Seriously,” explains Lee, “I was thrilled with the results of the first auction of my material, and as soon as it was over, I was on the phone with John Petty inviting him back out to get Part Two together. It’s sort of sad to part with these old friends, but I really need the space. Plus the guys at Heritage are such fun to work with, and I know my material is making a lot of my fans happy. So I couldn’t be more pleased.”
The next round of the Stan Lee File Copy collection will be offered in Heritage’s upcoming auction to be held in conjunction with the Dallas Comicon on October 11-12, 2002. More information can be found at the HCA website at www.HeritageComics.com.
