Currency Auctions of America-Heritage to Sell Herget and Steele Collections In January, 2003 FUN Auction
Dallas, Texas: Currency Auctions of America-Heritage is proud to announce that two major currency collections have been consigned to our January, 2003 auction sale, to be conducted in Orlando, Florida on January 10-11 as the official currency sale of the Florida United Numismatists convention. The Walter Herget collection consists of almost 700 different Illinois National Bank Notes, along with significant Nationals from other states as well, while the collection of Bob Steele represents one of the most significant offerings of small size type and star notes ever. The Walter Herget collection, assembled over a period of over thirty years, is a virtual treasure trove of Illinois National Bank Notes, and is replete with notes from unique banks, early types, high denomination examples, and serial number 1 notes. Mr. Herget was fortunate enough to purchase intact the collection of Chet Taylor, a pioneer Illinois collector whose material was in large part acquired in the 1950’s through the 1970’s. Many of the notes in the Herget holdings have been off the market for at least fifty years, and many others have no records of ever being offered publicly to the numismatic fraternity. Also to be offered as part of the Herget collection are a pair of $100 First Charter Nationals, both from New York, as well as four California National Gold Bank Notes, a $5, a $10, and two excessively rare $20 examples, one a Series 1875 San Francisco note of which only seven specimens are known to exist (with the Herget collection note the finest known), and one from Oakland, which is one of only eight reported examples.
The Robert Steele collection of small size Legal Tender Notes and Silver Certificates is virtually complete, and offers an outstanding run of star notes including all of the classic rarities, such as the 1928 $1 Legal star (which grades Extremely Fine), the $2 1928B Legal star, which is one of only five such notes known, and the 1928 C, D, and E Silver Certificate stars. It is the most complete collection ever of star notes in these two series to ever be offered at public sale, and offers the first opportunity collectors have ever had to obtain a complete Legal and Silver Certificate star set (missing only the unique 1933 $10 star) in one sitting.
These two collections join the already consigned Massachusetts holdings of Paul and Margaret Abel, the Virginia National Bank Note collection of Emmett H. Brooks, and the Gerald Hoffman collection of Fractional Currency in what promises to be a landmark auction event.
