‘Paul Newman’ Daytona Rolex Leads $2.1 Million Timepieces Auction for Heritage

Exceptional Patek Phillipe chronographs also in high demand

NEW YORK (June 12, 2017) — Strong results and high interest from thousands of bidders led the way as a rare Rolex Ref. 6241 "Paul Newman" Cosmograph Daytona, circa 1965 – one of Rolex's the most famous and rare models – sold for $150,000 during Heritage Auctions' $2.1 million Watches and Fine Timepieces auction held June 6. Spirited bidding for the over 500 lots drove the final realized prices of many of the watches and timepieces well beyond their estimates.

"The competition was at an all-time high for this auction with over 3,000 bidders participating," said Jim Wolf, Director of Fine Timepieces at Heritage Auctions. "It was exciting to see the solid results. We are already preparing our October auction, which promises to be a premier event with numerous highly important watches already consigned."

Collectors gravitated to a number of exquisite and exceptional models from Patek Phillipe, including a Patek Philippe Important & Very Rare Gold Carillon Minute Repeating Watch, circa 1931, which hammered for $68,750 – triple its pre-auction high estimate, and a Patek Philippe Very Fine Ref. 3970/002 Yellow Gold Perpetual Calendar With Chronograph, Moon Phase, Leap Year & 24 Hour Indication, circa 1994, which realized $62,500. An unused Patek Philippe Ref. 5960P-001 Single Sealed Platinum Annual Calendar Chronograph sold for $50,000, while a Patek Philippe & Cie Rare & Very Fine Gold Trip Minute Repeater, Two Train Tandem Wind Pocket Watch, circa 1901 sold for $47,500.

Two other standout timepieces from the auction included a beautiful L. Leroy Unused Osmior Skeleton Tourbillon 18K Rose Gold Automatic Regulator Wristwatch Limited Edition No. 4 of 7, Ref. LL108 which garnered $45,000 and an amazing piece of timepiece design an Audemars Piguet Very Fine Platinum "Edward Piguet" Skeleton Tourbillon Model 25947PT, which sold for $40,000.
