Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #13052 ended Sunday, May 18, with 692 lots offered. 436 bidders placed bids, and 183 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $99,390.15 for 578 lots (86.7% of lots offered).A few highlights from the 05/18/03 ACA sale are:
Wham Comics #1 Denver pedigree (Centaur, 1940) CGC NM 9.4 White pages.
This Craig Carter cover features a gang of thugs getting bested. Paul Gustavson lends his craft to illustrate some of the interior artwork. This issue also features Speed Centaur, made famous in Centaur's Amazing Mystery Funnies. All other copies pale in comparison, as this is the highest graded CGC copy to date. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,850. Realized $3,680.00.
Robert Crumb - Original Cat Illustration (undated, early '60s).
Beautiful two-sided sketch by Robert Crumb is probably from one of his early sketch books. Front features a charming full-color (ink and crayon) illustration of a cat eating ice cream in bed; the reverse has multiple smaller sketches, including another full-color head shot. A terrific example of Crumb's early work. Measures 5.25" x 8.25", with art on both sides. Realized $3,565.00.
Enrich - Original Cover Art for Vampirella #104 (Warren, 1980).
Lush, gorgeous painting from the last days of Warren's Vampirella magazine, this is another spectacular image by the talented Enrich. Vampi's on the ground, but not for long, as the Scarlet Seductress will surely rise to the occasion and give this sword-wielding Hun the business. Bright, vibrant colors, and a terrific image of comicdom's sexiest vampire. Painting measures 16.5" x 24", with an image area of 15" x 20". Due to improper handling at some point in its lifetime, the top and right sides of the painting have suffered significant cracking; no white shows through, but the cracks are evident upon close examination. However, the painting still displays beautifully, and would be a gorgeous addition to any Vampi collection. Realized $3,565.00.
The Amazing Spider-Man #2 (Marvel, 1963) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
This is undoubtedly one of the most difficult of the early Amazing Spider-Man issues to find in grade, and this copy is a nice one that ranks among the top 10% of the copies CGC has seen to date. Seems like each early issue of this title introduced a new villain who immediately attained classic status. Here, in the second issue, the Vulture makes his auspicious debut, and Spidey was in for years of recurring battles with the strange foe. The Terrible Tinkerer also makes his first appearance. Steve Ditko raised the bar for cover excellence with this classic. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $2,529; VF/NM 9.0 value = $3,865. Realized $2,645.00.
Sub-Mariner Comics #19 (Timely, 1946) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages.
Angel story. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,500. Realized $2,242.50.
Green Mask #1 (Fox Features Syndicate, 1940) CGC VF 8.0 Off-white pages.
Golden Age master Lou Fine renders a stylish cover on this premiere issue. This issue features the origin of the underworld's most fearsome foes; the Green Mask and Domino. This stunning copy features great cover inks and nary a structural defect making it one of the highest graded copies to date. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $2,400. Realized $2,070.00.
More Fun Comics #100 (DC, 1944) CGC NM 9.4 Off-white to white pages. Johnny Quick cover.
Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,350. Realized $2,012.50.
Tales From the Crypt #38 Gaines File pedigree 3/12 (EC, 1953) CGC NM- 9.2 Cream to off-white pedigree.
This is a most brutal cover depicting a madman swinging an axe repeatedly into a coffin by Jack Davis. Because of the extreme violence this cover was self-censored; streams of blood and the figure of a woman's body in the coffin were removed. Bill Elder and "Ghastly" Graham Ingels lend their hands by providing some interior artwork too. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $515. Realized $1,840.00.
