Heritage Comics’ San Diego Comic-Con Signature Auction Said to be Cascading Out of Control!
More Sessions Added to Schedule; Show and Auction Attendees Advised to Plan Accordingly. DALLAS, TEXAS: According to a handwritten note found scrawled on the door of the Director of Auctions John Petty’s office, Heritage Comics’ (HCA) upcoming official Comic-Con Signature Auction is growing to monstrous proportions, threatening to devour much of northeast Texas. The note, recognizably in Petty’s handwriting - albeit with uncharacteristically shaky penmanship - was deciphered to read, “Sale… Growing…Bigger and Bigger…Must Have More Sessions!”
“None of us have actually seen John for several weeks,” said Jim Halperin, Co-Chairman of the company that maintains the offices in which Petty has apparently barricaded himself in preparation for the upcoming catalog-production marathon by Heritage’s cataloging staff. “But if he wants more sessions, then that’s what he’s going to get. God willing, someday he’ll even emerge from his office, physically and mentally intact, to witness those added sessions with his own eyes.”
Following his comments, Halperin revealed that HCA’s July Signature Auction, held in conjunction with Comic-Con International 2003: San Diego, would begin on Tuesday morning, July 15, 2003, rather than on Wednesday, July 16 as previously announced, and will run though Sunday evening, July 20. Session times and breakdowns have not yet been determined, but out-of-town dealers and collectors wishing to attend would be well-advised to plan to arrive in San Diego on Monday, July 14, and to leave on Monday, July 21.
With the deadline less than two weeks away, over 4,000 lots of comics and popular culture collectibles worth well over Heritage’s previous record ($5.2 million in October 2002, as listed in Guinness World Records) have already been consigned. Heritage is planning to produce at least four separate catalogs for the auction, and has stopped accepting individual consignment lots for that auction valued at under $5000. “Can this sale get even bigger?” asked Jim Halperin. “Who knows? What have you got? Bring it on!”
Mr. Petty could not be reached for comment.
