Latest Heritage Amazing Comics Auction™ Internet Results
Latest Heritage Amazing Comics Auction™ Internet Results Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #13062 ended Sunday, June 15, with 703 lots offered. 465 bidders placed bids, and 222 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $94,825.20 for 608 lots (86.48% of lots offered).A few highlights from the 06/15/03 ACA sale are:
Don Heck and Frank Giacoia - Original Cover Art for X-Men #37 (Marvel, 1967).
A pulse-pounding, all-out action cover as Marvel's Merriest Mutants, the unflappable X-Men, take on the malevolent Mutant-Master, leader of the infamous Factor Three! This classic large art Silver Age cover measures approximately 15"x 22" overall, with an image area of approximately 13" x 21", and is in excellent condition. The title and logos are all stats, and the figures of The Angel and Iceman are paste-overs, but are all original art. There is a certain amount of white-out in evidence, but it is used sparingly and does not in any way detract from this stunning image. Vintage large art covers, particularly those featuring A-level characters like the X-Men, are becoming more and more difficult to find, as they tend to find homes in permanent collections rather quickly. This is a great action cover featuring the whole team, and is not an opportunity to be passed up lightly. Realized $14,950.00
Gil Kane - Original Cover Art for Tomb of Dracula #15 (Marvel, 1973).
Although Gene Colan is certainly the artist most associated with Tomb of Dracula, the book had frequent guest artists lending a hand with the cover chores. The legendary Gil Kane managed to slip the cover to TOD #15 into his busy schedule, and the result is a memorable "sequential" cover showing Dracula being shot while in bat form. But -- how long will the vampire STAY DEAD? Gorgeous work from one of the masters of the medium. 11" x 17", excellent condition with moderate white-out, especially within the smoke emanating from Drac's chest. Realized $1,725.00
Robert Crumb - Original "Peoria Show" Illustration (1966).
Created for Crumb's famous (or infamous) "Peoria Show" exhibition in Peoria, IL, this is a charming rendering of a Silver Streak automobile. Unfortunately the piece has suffered some staining (something seems to have splattered it at some point in its life), but it doesn't detract from the simple elegance of Crumb's line work. Measures 18" x 14". Realized $1,725.00
All Star Comics #22 Double cover (DC, 1944) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white pages.
Nice patriotic cover. CGC notes, "First cover 6.5, second cover 9.0. Last appearance of Hop Harrigan." Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $1420, NM 9.4 = $1840. Realized $1,552.50
Famous Funnies #216 (Eastern Color, 1955) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
This is the final of an eight-issue consecutive run of covers drawn by Frank Frazetta. The art, the colors, the line work, all tell the story of why these eight Famous Funnies are the most collectible of the entire run. Vivid colors, sharp corners, and general tightness and flatness keep it a very pleasing and desirable book. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,400. Realized $1,552.50
Carl Burgos - Original Art for Tales to Astonish #63, page 16 (Marvel, 1965).
With his place in comics history secured by the creation of the original Human Torch in 1939, Carl Burgos left the four-color field in 1942 to pursue a career in the much more lucrative world of advertising art. However, once a comic artist, always a comic artist, and Burgos returned to the field briefly in the 1960s, where he spent a short but memorable stint on Giant Man in Tales to Astonish, and even penciled a tale of the new Human Torch in Strange Tales #123. The pin-up offered here is a classic image of Giant Man and the winsome Wasp, rendered by Burgos during his three-issue tenure on the title. In excellent condition, the piece measures approximately 13.5" x 21" overall, with some evidence of white paint in the bottom right corner, which does not affect the image in any way. Realized $1,552.50
