Largest-ever Pop Culture Auction Hits San Diego
Over $5 million worth of merchandise up for sale.
DALLAS, TEXAS: Over 4,000 individual lots of comic books, original comic art, vintage toys, classic movie posters and exquisite illustration art, with a total value well in excess of $5 million, will be offered for auction July 14-20 by Heritage Comics (HCA), in conjunction with Comic-Con International 2003: San Diego. The auction will take place at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 W. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101."We’re very excited about this sale," said John Petty, HCA’s Director of Auctions. "This is not only our biggest sale to date, but the biggest sale of its kind ever."
HCA was recently awarded a Guinness World Record for the largest sale of comic books, original art and movie posters in October, 2002. That sale, which included the comic book collection of Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage, realized $5.2 million.
"I wouldn’t be surprised to see this sale blow that one away," said Petty.
Highlights of the July sale include:
- Items from the personal collection of GI JOE creator Don Levine, including the original handcrafted JOE prototype (with a pre-auction estimate of $600,000), original GI JOE box and card art and other prototype and pre-production figures.
