The colors leap off the front of this clean, high-grade book. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,735; NM 9.4 value = $2,250. Realized $2,242.50
Robert Crumb - Original Cover Art for Arcade #23 (No Publisher, 1962).
Arcade was a series of sketches drawn in a note book that Crumb did as a young artist. He would often create a full-color cover and glue it to the cover of the composition book. This entertaining bit of Crumb history is a drawing of Mae West and W. C. Fields as they appeared in the film, "My Little Chickadee." These two well-known motion picture stars appear quite frequently in Crumb's sketchbooks and doodles. This art is rendered in ink and crayon, and measures 7.75" x 8.5". The work is bright and clear, with several small tears at the left edge, and some small creases in the center. The interior front cover is covered with Crumb sketches in blue pen. Realized $1,121.25
Showcase #20 (DC, 1959) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages.
Origin and first appearance Rip Hunter, Time Master. Moriera art. Only one CGC certified copy has earned a higher grade to date. Overstreet 2003 VF/NM 9.0 value = $986, NM 9.4 value = $1,300. Realized $1,035.00
All Star Comics #22 (DC, 1944) CGC VF+ 8.5 Off-white pages.
Extremely high-grade copy of this patriotic cover featuring Wonder Woman, Star Man, the Spectre, Hawkman and all of the other members of the team. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $1,000; VF/NM 9.0 value = $1,420. Realized $977.50
Robert and Charles Crumb - Original Sketch Art (undated).
One side of this sketch shows Robert Crumb's version of Jesus Christ, a frog in a hat and bowtie, and a man holding a gigantic plot of dirt over his head; the plot holds a giant tee and what looks like a golf ball, that has a window and a smaller man looking out of it. It's a pre-psychedelic slice of Robert Crumb's fertile imagination. The other side has several drawings by Robert's older brother, Charles. At the top is a picture of Robert and Charles playing chess, each chess piece has a very distinctive character drawn on the top. At the bottom is a small sketch by Robert of a cute, pimple-face girl, obviously drawn from life. Scattered throughout both sides are other tiny sketches by both brothers. This double-sided page is drawn in pencil by the Crumb brothers on a sheet of 6.75" x 8.5" note paper. The page shows some aging, but the art is clean and clear. Realized $948.75
America's Greatest Comics #4 (Fawcett, 1942) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white pages.
Spy Smasher, Bulletman, and the Big Red Cheese all grace the cover of this Fawcett 100-pager. The cardboard covers on these books are very sensitive, making these extremely tough to find in high-grade. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $875. Realized $920.00
