Latest Heritage Amazing Comics Auction™ Internet 13091

Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #13091 ended Sunday, September 7, with 931 lots offered. 611 bidders placed bids, and 296 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $101,891.45 for 818 lots (87.86% of lots offered). 8 after-auction lots were purchased by 7 bidders, for a total of $1,765.25.

A few highlights from the 09/07/03 ACA sale are:

All-Star Comics #7 (DC, 1941) CGC NM- 9.2 Off-white to white pages. Starring the Justice Society. Bernard Baily and Sheldon Moldoff art. To date, no other copies of this issue have been graded higher by CGC. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $4,200. Realized $4,255.00

Robert Crumb - Original Sketches "Apprentice Teacher" (undated, early '60s). This two-sided sketchbook page is a charming collection of drawings from the formative years of underground guru Robert Crumb. Side one features a delicately-rendered tonal pencil sketch titled "Apprentice Teacher," while the other side sports ten or so various doodles, including a Fritz-like feline who asserts "Boy, I'm a neat guy!" There's also a self-portrait, which brands its subject "a clod." A fascinating peek into the earliest years of this important artist. 7" x 8.5", excellent condition overall, with some creasing in the lower right corner, and general aging. Realized $2,472.50

Frank Frazetta - Original Illustration, African with Parasol (undated). A beautiful, finished pen-and-ink illustration of an African woman holding a parasol. The level of detail Frazetta is able to convey with just a few lines never ceases to amaze. This would make a superb addition to any Frazetta collection. 7" x 9.75", with tape stains at the edges and some fading due to an earlier framing. Provenance: the Alexander Gallery. Realized $2,127.50

Frank Frazetta - Original Sketches, Nudes (undated). A spectacular piece for the Frazetta collector, this two-sided sketchbook page features four graceful nudes on the front (including a sensual full-frontal portrait), and a gaggle of smaller sketches on the back, with mostly female nudes plus a gruff-looking caveman. As always, the master's pen (and pencil in some cases) seems to flow over the page as if by magic. 10.75" x 13.5", superb condition overall with very light tanning at the edges. Provenance: the Alexander Gallery. Realized $1,782.50

All-Star Comics #5 (DC, 1941) CGC FN 6.0 Off-white pages. Starring the Justice Society. First appearance Shiera Sanders as Hawkgirl. Bernard Baily and Sheldon Moldoff art. Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $1,332. Realized $1,552.50

Keith Pollard and Bob Layton - Original Cover Art for Thor #288 (Marvel, 1979). One of the mysterious Celestials oversees a battle royale between Thor and the Forgotten Hero on this terrific Bronze Age cover by Keith Pollard. The spectral figure of the Celestial is rendered on two separate acetate overlays (to delineate the different color schemes of the figure), with the fighting figures rendered on the actual art board. Bronze Age covers are a hot ticket right now, and this would be a solid investment for any collector looking to add a classic image to his portfolio. 11" x 17", with moderate white-out. Realized $1,527.20

Robert Crumb - Original Sketches, Architecture (undated, 1962?). This two-sided sketchbook page features some very detailed architectural drawings by a young Robert Crumb, whose sense of perspective was uncannily acute for one so young. The other side of the page has a few random sketches as well as three quotations that obviously struck Crumb as worth remembering (two of them by his brother Charles). A delightful piece of Crumborabilia. 7" x 8.5", excellent condition overall, with general aging and wear. Realized $1,265.00
