Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #13092 ended Sunday, September 21, with 1,267 lots offered. 576 bidders placed bids, and 319 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $118,320.65 for 1,208 lots (95.34% of lots offered). 10 after-auction lots were purchased by 10 bidders, for a total of $1,968.50.

A few highlights from the 09/21/03 ACA sale are:

Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white pages. Unrestored copy of this historic first issue. Art by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko; Fantastic Four cross-over. Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $2,526. Realized $3,565.00

Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC Apparent FN- 5.5 Slight (A) Off-white pages. The big one - first appearance of Spider-Man. CGC notes: "Restoration includes: small amount of color touch on cover." Jack Kirby cover; Steve Ditko art. Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value = $1,263; VG 4.0 value = $2,526; FN 6.0 value = $3,789. Realized $2,702.50

All Winners Comics #21 (Timely, 1947) CGC VF- 7.5 Off-white pages. Syd Shores bondage cover. Al Avison art. Rated "rare" by Gerber, "scarce" by Overstreet. Overstreet 2003 VF 8.0 value = $2,350. Realized $2,472.50

Steve Mufatti - Original Art for Casper the Friendly Ghost #20, page 4 (Harvey, 1954). Casper, the Friendly Ghost is easily Harvey's most famous character. The comics were originally based on the "Casper" animated series, but after 20 or so issues, realized how limited this was. They began to expand Casper's personality, his environment and the characters he interacted with. Steve Mufatti is still following the animated cartoon style in this 12" x 18" image drawn on a sheet of 14" x 22.5" bristol board. Wendy, the Good Little Witch makes her historic first appearance in this story, to boot. The art is very clean, with almost no sign of wear. Realized $1,897.50

Robert Crumb - Original Sketches "Art Notes" (1961). A dapper crocodile dominates side one of this terrific two-sided sketchbook page. Side two features various headshots and architectural renderings, but perhaps most interestingly, Crumb has laid down some thoughts in a section called "Art Notes: 6 April 1961." 5.25" x 8.25", excellent condition with some overall aging. Realized $1,610.00

Lee Elias - Original Cover Art for Witches Tales #10 (Harvey, 1953). The Prince of Darkness himself makes an appearance on this hellish Harvey cover by the inimitable Lee Elias. Unfortunately, white-out has been brushed over some key elements of the artwork, including Satan's noggin, and there is a glue stain over the infernal crotch area where a text box was once attached. 13.75" x 20" with an image area of 11" x 16.5". Realized $1,610.00

Frank Frazetta - Original Preliminary Sketch, "Mastodon" (undated). Man vs. mammoth beast is rendered forcefully in this thrilling pencil prelim for the painting "Mastodon" by the legendary Frank Frazetta. 7" x 9.75", excellent condition overall, some discoloration at the left edge. Realized $1,610.00
