Latest Heritage Amazing Comics Auction™ Internet 13121
Dallas, TX - Heritage’s Amazing Comics Auction™ (ACA) sale #13121 ended Sunday, December 7, with 1,281 lots offered. 653 bidders placed bids, and 330 of them were successful, for a total sell-through of $140,993.55 for 1,144 lots (89.30% of lots offered). 24 after-auction lots were purchased by 15 bidders, for a total of $3,323.90.A few highlights from the 12/07/03 ACA sale are:
Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC Apparent VF- 7.5 Extensive (P) Cream to off-white pages. A truly historical book, Superman #1 arrived scarcely a year after the Man of Steel's first appearance in Action #1, proving his meteoric rise in popularity. This issue retells the origin of Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, with new material. The Superman pin-up on the back cover is the first pin-up in comics. Ranked by Overstreet as the fourth most valuable Golden Age comic book, it's got one of the instantly recognizable covers that quickens the heartbeat of any serious comic book collector. Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value = $16,000; VG 4.0 value = $32,000; FN 6.0 value = $48,000; VF 8.0 value = $120,000. Realized $12,650.00
Batman #1 (DC, 1940) CGC Apparent VF 8.0 Slight (P) Off-white to white pages. After lurking in the pages of Detective Comics for three years, Batman and Robin finally swing into their own title with this key issue. The origin of Batman is reprinted from Detective #33, with Bob Kane's splash page art from Detective #34. It also has the first appearance of the Joker and the Cat (Catwoman). This comic also has the first Batman and Robin pin-up on the back cover, as well as a text piece and photo of Bob Kane inside. This copy has received only slight professional restoration, and it's beautiful appearance is sure to quicken the pulse of Bat-fans everywhere. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: spine split sealed, cover cleaned and pressed, reinforced." Lone Ranger Comics #1 (Lone Ranger Inc., 1939) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white to white pages. First Western comic book devoted to a single character. Second version with large full promo poster pasted over centerfold and a smaller poster pasted over back cover, includes new additional premiums not originally offered. Overstreet lists this book as "rare". Highest grade yet by CGC for this issue. Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $3,200. Realized $3,565.00
Fantastic Four #48 (Marvel, 1966) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white to white pages. Stan Lee story. Jack Kirby and Joe Sinnott art. Partial origin and first appearance of the Silver Surfer and Galactus. One of the highest-graded copies CGC has certified to date. Excellent cover colors. Overstreet 2003 NM 9.4 value = $1,350. Realized $2,702.50
X-Men #1 (Marvel, 1963) Apparent FN/VF 7.0 Cream to off-white pages. Origin and first appearance of the X-Men. CGC notes: "Top edge of cover trimmed". Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $1,737. Realized $1,725.00
Superman #3 (DC, 1940) CGC Apparent VF+ 8.5 Moderate (P) Off-white pages. An early issue which stars the Greatest Superhero of all, with stories reprinted from Action Comics #5 and 6. Cool train cover. Story and art by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. CGC notes, "Restoration includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, cleaned, reinforced." Overstreet 2003 GD 2.0 value = $718; VG 4.0 value = $1,436; FN 6.0 value = $2,154; VF 8.0 value = $4,850. Realized $1,552.50
Detective Comics #225 (DC, 1955) CGC FN+ 6.5 Off-white pages. Origin and first appearance of the Martian Manhunter. Batman and Robin appear. Win Mortimer cover. Sheldon Moldoff art. Overstreet 2003 FN 6.0 value = $1,077. Realized $1,437.50
