Astonishing Barber Quarter Collection Anchors Heritage's June 2000 Long Beach Auction

Dallas, Texas: A fabulous collection of Barber quarters, completed by Dale Krueger, has been consigned to Heritage's June 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale. According to Greg Rohan, Heritage's Executive VP, "This is one of the most extraordinary complete collections of Barber Quarters that I have ever seen, and certainly the finest to be auctioned in more than a decade. The certified grades of the coins in the Dale Krueger Collection are simply spectacular: 14 MS 64s; 33 MS 65s; 24 MS 66s; 1 MS 67; and 2 MS 68s. Their freshness and originality also must be seen to be appreciated. And many of the coins are still in their original holders as purchased."

"Dale Krueger began collecting coins around 1970," noted HNAI Director Bob Korver. "His youthful interests including trying to fill the Whitman folders for Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels, Buffalo nickels, and Mercury dimes. This was a little more difficult than it might sound, as he was part of a military family, and moved around the world from New Jersey to Germany to Texas. When possible, he would visit banks and bring home hundreds of rolls to sort through."

Dale's serious pursuit of coins began around 1990. His position as a VP Consumer Markets with Merrill Lynch provided him with the wherewithal to pursue high grade Mint State coins. His first Barber quarter purchase was an 1896-S in MS 64. According to Krueger: "I had never had a real interest in the Barber coinage, but I recognized the date as a much-sought rarity. The coin was beautifully toned in multi-colors. I immediately began to acquire other Barber quarters and read everything I could find about them. My interest was spurred by the creation of the Barber Coin Collectors Society and the publishing of David Lawrence's book on Barber quarters."

In 1991, Krueger left Merrill Lynch and became President of Ashford Financial Group, providing him with greater opportunity to travel and work on completing his collection. Concluded Krueger: "I derived much pleasure putting this set together over the years, both in acquiring needed dates, and in up-grading the coins I already had. I believe the series is vastly under-rated and under-appreciated." When bidders see the quality of these coins, that hopefully will change.
