Bolen and Palmerston Rarities to Anchor Heritage's Central States Auction

Dallas, Texas: Heritage Numismatic Auctions has announced that selections from two major collections will be anchoring their Central States Signature Sale, being held April 22-23 in Milwaukee. The two consignments have a combined value exceeding $2 million.

"Combine a market this strong," reflected Heritage Co-Chairman Steve Ivy, "with the draw of a major convention like Central States, and you know that major consignments are sure to follow. Our Central States Auction now contains more than $3 million in fresh consignments, led by these astonishing selections from the Waldo Bolen Collection and the Ernest J. Palmerston Collection. The collections were formed under very different circumstances, but the collectors obviously shared a passion for rarity and quality."

"The story of Waldo Bolen's Collection," noted Heritage Executive Vice President Greg Rohan, "is almost as fascinating as the coins themselves. Waldo Bolen had the pleasure of assembling two of the finest coin collections of the century. First, he collected a complete set of every dime the U.S. Mint produced, except for the unique 1873-CC No Arrows, and then auctioned that collection. When the unique 1873-CC No Arrows Dime finally came on the market, he purchased it, just for the pleasure of knowing that he had owned every U.S. dime. That is the collector spirit. Well, Bolen became so enamored of the issue that he then decided to complete an 11-piece 1873-CC set. The results speak for themselves."

The Bolen coins in Central States includes the following rarities:
1873-CC No Arrows Dime, Unique, MS 64 PCGS, Ex: Eliasberg
1873-CC Arrows Dime, MS 64 PCGS, Ex: Norweb
1873-CC No Arrows Quarter, only 4 known, MS 62 PCGS, Ex: Eliasberg
1873-CC Arrows Quarter, MS 63 PCGS, Ex: Eliasberg
1873-CC No Arrows Half, MS 66 PCGS, Ex: Garrett
1873-CC Arrows Half, MS 63 NGC
1873-CC $1, AU 58 NGC
1873-CC Trade $1, MS 63 PCGS
1873-CC $5, XF 40 PCGS
1873-CC $10, XF 45 NGC
1873-CC $20, MS 60 PCGS

The Central States auction will also feature our first offering of coins from the Collection of Ernest J. Palmerston. "This magnificent assemblage of rarities," noted HNAI's Bob Korver, "was assembled by an East Coast family over two generations. The portion we are offering in Milwaukee obviously concentrates on Nineteenth Century gold. Future sales will contain additional areas of specialization. These coins were all collected prior to certification, and the discriminating eye of these numismatists is evident with every coin. Confirmation of their expert eye is found with every encapsulation."

The Palmerston consignment includes such rarities as:
1821 $2.50, MS 63 PCGS
1813 $5, MS 64 NGC

"The Springtime convention sponsored by the Central States Numismatic Society is one of the highlights of the U.S. auction calendar,' added Consignment Coordinator Leo Frese. "Numismatists and bidders from around the world come to America's heartland every spring to participate in Heritage's Central States auctions. As official auctioneer, only Heritage can bring your coins and currency to the buyers at this important gathering of numismatists. We are accepting consignments for this wonderful sale through March 15th, so it's not too late for consignors who want to sell their coins alongside these two great collections-but they need to act quickly. Information on consigning can be obtained at the Heritage Consignor Hotline, 1-800-US COINS (800-872-6467) Ext. 222."

Photographs of the Bolen and Palmerston coins can be found on Heritage's website, www.heritagecoin.com. Lot descriptions from the sale will be posted on the website in late March. "The Central States auction," announced Heritage C.O.O. Paul Minshull, "will also witness the first application of Heritage's Interactive Internet™ Bidding software. Currently, we post the full text of our auction catalogs on our website, and bidders can e-mail their bids directly to us after perusing our catalogs online. Our Interactive Internet™ software integrates the Internet into the Auction process itself, committing our customer service efforts to encompass the entire world. The software will allow bidders to register, read catalog descriptions, view photographs, view the current opening bid, and then execute a higher bid directly from their keyboards. Bidders will receive automatic confirmation of their bids, plus automatic notification if they are no longer the highest bidder. The ability to enter bids directly into the sale database from their PCs, as well as receiving e-mail confirmation of the status of their bids, will encourage increased bidder participation."

"The Interactive Internet™," concluded Heritage Co-Chairman Jim Halperin, "is a logical extension of Heritage's promise to our consignors to 'bring their coins to the buyers.' For more than a decade, Heritage has been using the trademark America's Convention Auctioneer™ and we mean it. We have been the official auctioneer of every major convention in America, including important shows like Central States. Now the time has come to reach out to the rest of the world in the same spirit. There is no better tool for this than the Internet, and we expect bidders from around the world to participate in a very meaningful way. Interactive bidding is really fabulous in its potential for consignors to realize higher prices."
