The Spectre Comes Calling at Heritage Comics!
Dallas, TX: Heritage Comics Auctions (HCA) will offer an unrestored copy of More Fun Comics #52, featuring the introduction and origin of the ghostly Spectre, in their upcoming Signature auction, to be held May 18-20 at the New Yorker Hotel in New York City.
"This copy of this landmark issue has been graded GD/VG 3.0 with Cream to off-white pages by CGC," said Ed Jaster, Director of Acquisitions for HCA. "On Overstreet's list of the ten most valuable comic books, it was quite a special day when we laid eyes on this marvelous, unrestored copy."
"This eerie superhero, the first character to actually die in his own origin story, was writer Jerry Siegel's follow-up to Superman," enthused Jaster. "He has been an enduring figure throughout the history of DC Comics, with every generation of comic fans getting to know him, both as a member of the Justice Society and as star of his own title several times in decades to come. He had a bluish-gray cape in his very first appearance; he would have a green cowl in the next issue and forever after. The book's cover and interior art are by the artist most associated with the character, Bernard Baily."
"Gerber's Photo-Journal gives this comic a scarcity rating of '8,'" added Jaster, "and CGC's census bears out everything we've heard about the scarcity of the book. Only two unrestored copies have been certified with higher grades by CGC to date."
This comic has a pre-auction estimate of $10,000.
