Press Release - May 9, 2005

Heritage Returns to Long Beach!

Dallas, TX: Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc (HNAI) will hold its upcoming Signature Auction on June 1-4, 2005 in Long Beach, California, as official auctioneer of the Long Beach Coin Expo. The auction will feature more than 3,000 lots, including some very significant collections. In addition to the Signature Auction, a separate on-line Bullet auction, with lot viewing in Long Beach, will be held in on Monday, June 6.

"There are some fabulous rarities in this auction," said Greg Rohan, President of HNAI, but the two that I'd particularly point out would be the 1838-O 50C Capped Bust with Reeded Edge, graded PR64 BM (for "Branch Mint") by PCGS, and the 1794 $1 coin, graded MS61 by NGC.

"One of the featured collections in the auction is that of Dr. Theodore Almquist," said Rohan, "who started collecting coins in the 1970s, but sold off most of that collection in the boom market of the early 1980s. An inveterate collector, however, he started buying coins again during the 1990s after he started attending coin shows in the Washington and Baltimore areas. Rather than follow any dedicated collecting or investment strategy, if he saw a beautiful coin, he would buy it; accordingly, his diverse collection is full of eye-appealing coins."

Highlights of the Dr. Theodore Almquist Collection include:

"The Clifford Columbus Collection was inherited by our consignor from a relative who had quietly purchased coins without the family being aware of any interest," Rohan continued. "It is an exceptional assemblage that we are honored to present to the numismatic community."

Highlights of the Clifford Columbus Collection include:

"The consignor of the Empire State Collection started collecting coins as a very young man," Rohan said, "focusing on 'the usual cents, nickel, and dime folders that we all were busy filling.' He took a 20-year hiatus after his marriage, but then became a much more dedicated numismatist. For the last quarter century, he has been pursuing rarities, often trying to complete mintmarked type sets.

Highlights of the Empire State Collection include:

"This auction also includes Part Five of the Larry Rausch Collection of Errors," Rohan added. "This is another exciting group of significant nineteenth and twentieth century error coins. Many specialists search unsuccessfully for years for such dramatic examples, so they have been paying keen attention to these coining rarities."

Highlights of the Larry Rausch Collection of Errors, Part Five include:

"Last but not least," Rohan said, "we have the Western Hills Collection, assembled by a connoisseur of superb rarities. This very private collector, who wishes no publicity except which the coins themselves deserve, has nonetheless assembled a collection that shouts 'quality' from the rooftops. Containing more than five dozen 'finest known' examples across a broad range of denominations, we expect frenzied bidding from both Registry and Type Collectors - not to mention the rarities that specialists must pursue when they appear infrequently on the market. This is, simply, an incredible collection that displays quality in many unexpected - but always appreciated - areas. Take one look and you will agree."
