Results of Heritage's Twice-Monthly Amazing Comics Auctions for June, 2005
DALLAS, TEXAS: Heritage's Bi-Weekly Amazing Comics Auctions (ACA), including auctions #15061 (closed Sunday, June 5), and #15062 (closed Sunday, June 19), posted strong results for June, 2005.
The ACA auctions saw 1,007 bidders competing for 2,049 lots over the two auctions, 521 were successful. Total ACA sell-through was $307,552 for 2,049 lots sold (94.24% overall).
Heritage's ACA auctions begin and end on the first and third Sunday of each month at 10pm CT. Call today to consign to a future auction, as the earliest consignments receive the most attention and publicity. Highlights from the June ACA auctions include:
Steve Ditko, Tom Mandrake, and Fred Carrillo - Astral Frontier #1 Complete Unpublished Story, Group of 3 (Whitman, 1982). From the unpublished title Astral Frontier #1 come three science-fiction thrillers, "Star Guider, the Mystery of the Map" (Steve Ditko art, seven pages), "Marshal of the Zodiac, The Icarus Assignment" (Tom Mandrake art, twelve pages), and "Wyatt Early, Vengeance Delayed" (Fred Carillo art, fourteen pages). The image area of Ditko story pages measure approximately 12" x 18", while the others measure 10" x 15", and the art is in Excellent condition.From the Random House Archives. REALIZED: $2,070.
Mark Bright and Bob Layton - Iron Man #229 Cover Original Art (Marvel, 1988). Iron Man takes on two of his most powerful foes, the Titanium Man and the Crimson Dynamo, in this repulsor-blasting cover by penciler Mark Bright and inker Bob Layton. The image area measures 9.75" x 15". The Titanium Man figure is a photocopy, and not original art. The work includes all the original title type and masthead paste-ups.There are a few minor stains; otherwise the art is in Excellent condition. REALIZED: $1,840.
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC GD/VG 3.0 Off-white pages. Spider-Man's origin is retold. First Fantastic Four crossover. First appearances of John Jameson, J. Jonah Jameson, and the Chameleon. Steve Ditko cover (Jack Kirby layout) and art. CGC notes, "3 1/2 in. piece of tape on back cover. REALIZED: $1,725.
The Amazing Spider-Man #1 (Marvel, 1963) CGC GD/VG 3.0 White pages. Spider-Man's origin is retold in this inaugural issue of the popular title. This book features the first Fantastic Four crossover, plus first appearances of John Jameson, J. Jonah Jameson, and the Chameleon. Classic Steve Ditko cover (with Jack Kirby layouts) and interior art. REALIZED: $1,610.
Amazing Fantasy #15 (Marvel, 1962) CGC GD- 1.8 Off-white pages. When this title changed from Amazing Adult Fantasy to Amazing Fantasy, Marvel truly mixed things up by introducing us to what would become their most beloved character. This issue features the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man, along with introductions of Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Jack Kirby provided the now classic cover, with interior art by Steve Ditko. REALIZED: $1,495.
The Amazing Spider-Man #13 (Marvel, 1964) CGC VF/NM 9.0 Off-white to white pages. Stan Lee story. Steve Ditko cover and art. Origin and first appearance of Mysterio. REALIZED: $1,437.
Alex Raymond - Rip Kirby Daily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 5-22-54 (King Features Syndicate, 1954). Master draftsman Alex Raymond was one of the finest comic strip artists ever, as well as a superb storyteller. Here Rip Kirby awakens Desmond to help him pack for a journey to the coast. The image area of this daily measures 20" x 5.5", and the art is in Excellent condition. REALIZED: $1,380.
Avengers #60-99 Group (Marvel, 1969-1972) Condition: Average VF+. This nice forty-issue lot of Bronze Age Avengers tales includes #60 (Wasp and Yellowjacket wed), 61, 62, 63 (Goliath becomes Yellowjacket, Hawkeye becomes the new Goliath), 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71 (first appearance of the Invaders and Nighthawk, Black Knight joins team), 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80 (introduction of Red Wolf), 81, 82 (Daredevil appearance), 83 (introduction of the Liberators), 84, 85, 86, 87 (origin of the Black Panther), 88 (written by Harlan Ellison), 89, 90, 91, 92, 93 (52 pages), 94, 95, 96, 97 (Golden Age crossover), 98 (Goliath becomes Hawkeye), and 99. REALIZED: $1,380.
Marge's Little Lulu #19-30 Bound Volume (Dell, 1950). These are Western Publishing file copies which have been trimmed and bound into one hardcover volume. The comics included here are #19 (first appearance of Wilbur), 20 (first appearance of Mister McNabbem), 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30 (Christmas cover). Every comic has "Office Copy" stamped on the cover. REALIZED: $1,380.
Avengers #57 (Marvel, 1968) CGC NM+ 9.6 Off-white pages. This is the nicest copy we've ever offered of this issue, the first appearance of the Silver Age Vision. The story also features the death of Ultron-5. The cover and interior art are by John Buscema. REALIZED: $1,265.
Fantastic Four #100-153 Group (Marvel, 1970-74) Condition: Average VF. This lot consists of issues #100 (vs. Thinker and Puppet Master), 101, 102, 103, 104 (Magneto cover/story), 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112 (Hulk vs. Thing), 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129 (first Thundra), 130, 131, 132 (Medusa joins), 133, 134, 135, 136, 137, 138, 139, 140, 141, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150 (Quicksilver and Crystal wedding), 151, 152, and 153. Dell Adventure Quarterlies Bound Volumes (Dell, 1954-56). These are Western Publishing file copies that have been trimmed and bound into 5 hardcover volumes. The comics included here are Sergeant Preston of the Yukon #10, 11, 12, 13 (origin of Sgt. Preston), 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 (origin of Yukon King; last painted cover), 19, 20, and 21; The Lone Ranger's Companion Tonto #14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21; Rin Tin Tin #4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11; Wild Bill Elliott #16 and 17, and Four Color #643 (Elliott); Jungle Jim #4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10; Queen of the West Dale Evans #6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13; Red Ryder Ranch Magazine #145, 146, 147, and 148; Annie Oakley and Tagg #6, 7, 8, and 9; and The Cisco Kid #30, 31, 32, and 33. Rex Allen Comics #2-31 Bound Volume (Dell, 1951-58). You can get the entire run of this series, # 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, and 31 with one bid (note that there was no #1 of the series)! These are Western Publishing file copies which have been trimmed and bound into three hardcover volumes. REALIZED: $1,045.
Super Comics #97-121 Bound Volumes (Dell, 1946-49). While these Western Publishing file copies have been trimmed and bound for inclusion into these two hardcover volumes, they're probably among the best copies you're going to find (especially since many have paper covers), as they've been very well preserved here, with very nice page quality. Issues # 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 111, 112, 113, 114, 115, 116, 117, 118, 119, 120, and 121 are included here. Featured characters include Dick Tracy, Harold Teen, and Little Orphan Annie. REALIZED: $1,035.
