1795 $1 Draped Bust, Centered MS65 PCGS.
B-15, BB-52. R.2. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle reverse dollars of 1795 come in two varieties. It is widely believed that the 1795 B-14, BB-51 dollar with Liberty
placed too far to the left
was struck prior to the slightly more aesthetically pleasing
centered bust
die.
In his November 1881
Type Table
sale catalog, John W. Haseltine termed this obverse die, "fillet head; well centered." When Bolender published his book
The United States Early Silver Dollars from 1794 to 1803
he called this die, "fillet bust." For more than 50 years many dealers and collectors referred to the 1795 Draped Bust, Small Eagle reverse dollars in this manner (the fillet meaning ribbon, and referring to the ribbon which is tied at the back of Liberty's hair). Both in the past and present, the 1795 Draped Bust, Centered dollar represents an important type coin for anyone interested in early United States silver dollars, 1794-1803.
The earliest dollars struck and dated 1795 are known by most collectors today as "Flowing Hair Dollars." The Flowing Hair design was eventually replaced by the Draped Bust, Small Eagle type. According to Walter Breen, "This new design represented the fulfillment of a dream for the new Mint Director, Henry William DeSaussure. On his accession, he had named his two ambitions: to place gold coinage into circulation; and to improve the design of all denominations, particularly of silver coins. To this purpose, he engaged the illustrious portraitist Gilbert Stuart, who submitted a drawing of Mrs. William Bingham (the former Ann Willing) as Ms. Liberty." Breen further notes that John Eckstein, an artist, translated this drawing into "models" (perhaps in plaster as Bowers later noted) for Mint Engraver Robert Scot. Eckstein received $30.00 on September 9, 1795, for his two "models." Breen postulates that the second of these is likely to have been the small eagle on clouds.

1921 $20 MS64 PCGS.
The 1921 is a classic rarity in the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series. It is comparable in overall rarity to the 1920-S, but is considerably more challenging as a condition rarity, especially in the better grades of Uncirculated. A few more coins in the XF-AU grade range are known of the 1921 (about 70 1921 specimens have been certified XF-AU by PCGS and NGC, as contrasted to approximately 50 XF-AU examples of the 1920-S), but there are only a handful of 1921 coins extant above MS63 (specifically, the services have graded eight near-Gem and finer 1921 specimens, and 34 1920-S MS64 and better coins).
The reported mintage of the 1921 was 528,000 pieces, which is lower-than-average for the 1920s era, when totals of one million or more coins were common. Nevertheless, the figure was not so low as to suggest that the issue would be a tough date. In this regard, Paul Green, in an August 15, 2006
Numismatic News
article entitled "1921 Double Eagle Survives in Low Numbers," writes: "The 1921 was more than a decade before the Gold Recall Order and the melting that followed. It's easy to understand why a date in the 1930s might have been heavily melted, but it's less easy to figure out why the 1921 would have been melted in large numbers. After all, a number of dates produced after 1921 show little evidence of being heavily destroyed in the recall. The 1923, for example, had a nearly identical mintage (566,000 pieces), but there is no evidence of unusual melting...yet the 1923 is $850 in VF20, but the 1921 is priced at $12,000."
Approximately half of the extant 1921 double eagle population is located at the circulated grade levels, prompting Green to say: "The circulated numbers seen at both grading services suggest that the 1921 had a rather routine period, with some coins being released, although probably not all. There is reason to believe that a small number went overseas." If some of this issue did in fact go overseas, it must have been very sm

Mexico, Carlos and Joanna 8 Reales ND (1538).
Since the re-discovery of certain archival documents by Dr. Alberto Pradeau in 1947, it has been known that the early Mexican Mint did strike large, dollar-sized silver 8 reales in 1538, two years after the Mint began operation. Those documents were the transcripts from an investigation by Francisco Tello de Sandoval in 1545, as ordered by the king in response to accusations of fraud by Hernan Cortés, Spanish conqueror of Mexico. The investigation exposed eyewitness accounts by various mint officials (including Francisco del Rincón, the first assayer at the mint) that 8 Reales were made briefly in 1538 until it was determined that they were too difficult to craft properly under the conditions that existed. Without a single specimen to prove the existence of these 8 Reales, it was believed that all specimens struck had disappeared forever.
In the 1990s, however, an unidentified Spanish shipwreck, sunk circa 1550 in the Caribbean yielded three specimens of the long-lost Rincón 8 Reales in a chest of about 2,000 silver coins from the early Mexican mint. The first specimen to be announced publicly was promoted as "the first dollar of the Americas" in the past couple of years by dealers Ira and Larry Goldberg. That coin ultimately became the key showpiece in a private "Coinage of the Americas" collection prominently displayed by the Goldbergs at the ANA's "World's Fair of Money" in San Francisco last summer. Due to the fact that that coin is slightly underweight (from corrosion) and of substandard fineness (possibly evidence of at least some of the difficulty mentioned by the mint-workers in the 1545 investigation), and because it was the only specimen known to the public, a few modern researchers quietly questioned its authenticity. That opinion will undoubtedly be reversed upon examination of this second specimen, the first one to be offered for sale at public auction. The current whereabouts of the third specimen, which th

1915-S Panama-Pacific Set NGC.
This is the most famous set of these coins, and the present auction appearance is the first time this set has ever been offered for public competition. Each of the first coins struck from the dies of the half dollar, gold dollar, gold quarter eagle, the round and octagonal fifty dollar coins were gathered together and presented to Charles C. Moore, the president of the Exposition. The first octagonal gold coin was struck by Mint Superintendent T. W. H. Shanahan himself. All of the #1 or first strike specimens were placed in a special gold presentation case by Shreve & Co. This set is photographed in
Silver & Gold Commemorative Coins 1892 to 1954
by Anthony Swiatek and Walter Breen. Without a doubt, this set is one of the most historic and important of all commemorative issues and will certainly become the highlight of any advanced collection.
The 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. In addition, the celebration commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the Pacific Ocean by Balboa. Competition to host the fair was intense among cities, with President Taft announcing that San Francisco was selected in 1911. San Francisco was still recovering from the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906, and this international event helped provide employment and restore much civic pride to a city, which had literally been knocked to its knees. The site chosen for the Exposition is the current Marina District, which in 1911 was a mud flat. In all, 635 acres of mud were reclaimed for building sites, and construction of numerous buildings consumed over one hundred million feet of lumber and employed a small army of construction workers for three years. Landscape architect John McLaren, (also the designer of Golden Gate Park) was in charge of the exposition's landscaping, and worked closely with the many different architects involved in the project to ensure a harmonious appearance.<

1854-O $20 AU53 PCGS.
Among the popular New Orleans Mint Double Eagles, the 1854-O ranks a close second in overall rarity behind the equally well known 1856-O. The original mintage for the 1854-O was a paltry 3,250 pieces, and it is one of the rarest of all Coronet Twenties, being comparable to other such noteworthy issues as the 1870-CC, 1881, 1885, 1886, and the proof-only dates from the 1880s. Collector interest (and prices realized) for these prized O-mint rarities has escalated in recent years, as evidenced by two AU or better examples sold by Heritage last year, both in excess of $160,000. This bright yellow-gold example displays prooflike tendencies in the recesses and bits of reddish patina about the peripheries. Surface marks are scattered and generally unobtrusive. A fine bidding opportunity for the serious O-mint or Southern gold collector. Population: 1 in 53, 2 finer (11/04).

This historic rarity had an original mintage of only 3,789 pieces, with attrition taking a heavy toll on those struck. In terms of absolute rarity in the series of double eagles, the 1870-CC is surpassed only by the 1861 Paquet, the 1856-O, and the business strikes of 1882 and 1886. Doug Winter estimates that today only 35-45 1870-CC twenties are known in all grades. Three-quarters of the known survivors are no better than Fine-VF and are heavily bagmarked, making this the rarest date in the series from the standpoint of condition rarity. Only 3-4 AU coins are believed known, and no Uncirculated pieces are even rumored to exist. In our recent September Long Beach Sale, we offered a hitherto unknown AU50 coin that realized a very impressive $172,500. It is instructive to note that two of the most illustrious collections of gold coins to be sold in the 20th century, Louis Eliasberg and Harry Bass, had XF40 and XF45 coins in their respective collections. This was certainly not because they couldn't afford finer examples, as both had very deep pockets, but it is simply because high grade pieces such as this one were not available.
It is difficult to overestimate the rarity of this issue. Carson City gold is a highly collected area of U.S. numismatics, but few serious collectors are able to own an 1870-CC in any grade. The coins that are known are owned by advanced collectors and it is often several years before a desirable example (XF or better) comes on the market. This particular coin is listed as the #1 coin on the Winter / Cutler Condition Census; however, since publication of that work in 2001 an AU55 piece has surfaced, and today this coin is the second finest known.
All 1870-CC double eagles are known to be softly struck. This piece is also weakly defined overall, but not any more so than other Type Two twenties, issues such as the 1869-S and 1870-S come to mind as coins that are almost never found with anything more than a mediocre strike. The
