Juke Box Comics #1-6 Group - File Copies (Famous Funnies, 1948-49).
How'd you like to own file copies of a title's
entire run
? That's what we're offering here, and what an unusual title this is, filled with biographical stories of singers and bandleaders. Covers feature Dinah Shore, Jimmy Durante, and Desi Arnaz, and it's worth noting that Alex Toth drew the cover of the first issue. Overstreet calls attention to a "transvestitism story" in #2; it's in the life story of bandleader Elliot Lawrence, and no, Mr. Lawrence himself does not participate in the cross-dressing! The breakdown of grade is as follows: #1 NM- (with an overhang), #2 NM+, #3 VF/NM, #4 FN/VF ,#5 VF/NM, and #6 VF. Approximate Overstreet value for group = $1,250.

Camera Comics Group - Mile High pedigree (U. S. Camera Publishing Corp., 1944-46).
The oddball covers alone would make these books worth getting, and in any case how can you pass up the chance to nab six Mile Highs with one bid? These issues have lots of war-action stories in which cameras end up playing a role, and there are also other tales involving various intrepid fictional photographers. Also included are biographical features on key real-life photography figures like George Eastman, Louis Daguerre, etc. Each issue from #2 on has 32 pages of comics with 16 pages of photos in the middle! Included here are #1 (NM; note that this issue was printed in a smaller format than the other issues), #2 (NM), #4 (NM-), #5 (VF+), #7 (VF/NM), and #8 (VF/NM). Approximate Overstreet value for group = $725.

Miss America Magazine V1#3 Mile High pedigree (Timely, 1944) Condition: NM-.
These comics are
delightful
, and we almost never see any issue in any grade, so having the Mile High is amazing! The point of greatest significance is that this is the second appearance of Patsy Walker. In addition to the full-color comic section (which also has two Miss America 7-pagers) this 64-page comic "for teen-age girls about teen-age girls" has plenty of black-and-white content too. There's advice, fashion, paper dolls, and plenty of breathless Hollywood stuff including photos of Shirley Temple, Frank Sinatra, and many others. What we thought was a photo cover at first glance is actually a painting by Louise Altson! We thought it interesting that Jean Goodman (wife of Martin) was listed as editor. This book's cover's so fresh and the pages so nice that anyone who loves Timely will love it as much as we do. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $640.

Miss America Magazine V1#4 Mile High pedigree (Timely, 1945) Condition: NM.
As a rule, the teenage girls who bought these issues didn't save them, and they certainly never kept them in condition like this! We had never seen this one in any condition before. The seven-page Patsy Walker story is one of her earliest appearances (she debuted in V1#2), and there are 14 pages of the superheroine Miss America here. The rest is "girl stuff," including a photo feature on 12-year-old Elizabeth Taylor. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $640.

True Comics #1 Mile High pedigree (True, 1941) Condition: VF+.
This is considered the very first educational comic book, and it's the first comic published by the Parents' Institute (later known as Parents' Magazine Institute). With a masthead full of various academics as advisory editors (and listing Mickey Rooney and Shirley Temple as "junior advisory editors," the book had an impressive air about it, and the series proved a success. Speaking of impressive things, this Mile High book's cover gloss is quite remarkable. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $184; VF/NM 9.0 value = $272.

Joan of Arc #nn (Magazine Enterprises, 1949) Condition: NM.
Photos featuring Ingrid Bergman as the Maid of Orleans grace both front and back covers and the two inside covers as well. Writer Gardner Fox and artist Ogden Whitney adapted the classic story. This comic's also known as
A-1 Comics
#21. Based on this copy's quality and provenance, we think it may well be the Edgar Church/Mile High copy. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $320.

Challenger #2 Mile High pedigree (Interfaith Committee, 1945) Condition: NM-.
The full name of this book's publisher is the Interfaith Committee of the
Protestant Digest
. The comic is "a magazine pledged to fight prejudice, discrimination, and all other forms of fascism in North America." The interior has some very early art by Joe Kubert, and both his story and most of the others are anti-fascist tales, though like 99% of all Golden Age comics, this has gag pages too! The striking cover alone makes this collectible, and the black cover of this Mile High copy looks excellent. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $425.

Your United States #nn Mile High pedigree (Lloyd Jacquet Studios, 1946) Condition: NM-.
With one page devoted to illustrated facts about each state, and even half-pages for then-territories Alaska and Hawaii, what's not to like? Well, plenty, according to Fredric Wertham in
Seduction of the Innocent
: "... practically every state... has a scene of violence." At any rate, Sid Greene and Tex Blaisdell provided the art. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $265.

Comic Cavalcade Giveaway #nn Tomorrow The World (DC, 1945) Condition: VF.
A suburban father welcomes his German nephew to the family... and he turns out to be a "Hitler youth" type complete with swastika armband, spouting anti-Semitic propaganda and trying to bludgeon his cousin... causing his uncle to try to
strangle
him until cooler heads prevail! Not your average DC fare, all the more jarring because the art's by E. E. Hibbard, known for lighthearted Flash stories. The story is based on a movie of the same name. This comic was published without a cover, and we were pleased to find this uncommon item in such nice condition. Overstreet 2006 VF 8.0 value = $550.

The old funnybook adage about #2 issues being scarcer than #1s would seem to hold true here -- we hadn't seen this second issue before. We probably won't see a copy this nice ever again! Like many novice publishers, True (aka Parents' Magazine Institute) entrusted the art on this new issue to the Funnies Inc. shop, and that group's most prominent creator Bill Everett drew a story on the Red Cross here. There's even a photo of Shirley Temple proofreading the issue -- these guys were
thorough
! Great stuff from the Golden Age. Overstreet 2006 NM- 9.2 value = $165.
