The painting depicts a peaceful countryside filling with soft light from the right with beautifully colored clouds in the lower sky. The foreground is shaded by trees on the right. A stream with cows wading, flows out from the left of the canvas to the right and then curves back again to the left. The stream passes back through high banks to the left and center, decorated with mature trees and a house at center. The background depicts a rolling landscape and a sloping mountain. An exceptionally detailed example of the period, this
Landscape
is part of a group of three paintings that passed through the market in 1952. Each painting in the series depicts a different time of day. The other two paintings
The Meadows
and
The Sunset
are currently in the collection of the Worcester Art Museum. This particular painting will be included in the supplement to Michael Quick's,

Henry A. Ferguson's
Sunset on Lake George
exemplifies the American landscape artist's shift in focus from the minute details of the Hudson River School, to an emphasis on the effects of reflective light and atmosphere. These luminous works created during the 1860s were made popular by artists like Martin Johnson Heade, Frederick Kensett, and Sanford R. Gifford, as well as Jasper Cropsey. According to exhibition records, Ferguson executed other paintings of Lake George in 1861 and 1864, which supports a circa date of 1860 for the present work. Ferguson traveled extensively throughout his career, sketching along the Hudson River, the Berkshire Mountains, and the White Mountains in addition to exotic locales such as Mexico, South America, Europe, and Africa. Ferguson was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1884, and was a member of the Century Association from 1879 to 1911. He exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, National Academy of Design, Century Association, Boston Art Club, Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.

FREDERICK ARTHUR BRIDGMAN (American 1847-1927)
King David, 1877
Oil on canvas
30in. x 25in.
Signed and dated lower right: F. A. Bridgman 1877
Provenance: Alexander Gallery, New York City; to private collection, Dallas, Texas
Born and raised in Alabama, Frederick A. Bridgman was one of the few great American practitioners of the Orientalist genre whose role was critical in the period between 1870 and 1880, the formative years of Orientalism in America. As a young man, he moved from Alabama to New York where he studied at the National Academy of Design in 1863. Three years later, he began a life-long residency in Paris where he became one of the leading and earliest members of the Pont-Aven artists' colony in Brittany. Bridgman studied from 1867 to 1871 with French academic master Jean-Leon Gerome who encouraged his students to paint exotic historical subjects. In 1872, Bridgman made the first of many trips to Spain and North Africa. He specialized in Orientalist and archaeological subjects, and his detailed, brilliantly colored, exotic scenes, especially of Algeria and Egypt, brought him tremendous fame and patronage in the 1870s and 1880s. His paintings are housed in important public collections, including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, National Academy of Design, Newark Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
