1873 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1281, Pollock-1423, R.4, PR63 ANACS.
The obverse, designed by J. A. Bailly, features a coiled hair bust of Liberty facing left. The reverse mimics the 'Amazonian' pattern Silver Dollar save for a reduction in the size of the eagle and the addition of the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above and the weight and fineness below. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Deeply toned in lavender-gray with deep sea-green about the obverse and reverse borders. The surfaces are remarkably blemish-free for the PR63 level. Accurately graded, nonetheless, with slightly subdued surfaces and mostly bold striking details.

1862 50C Half Dollar, Judd-294, Pollock-352, Low R.7, PR61 Red and Brown ANACS.
The design is similar to that used on regular issue 1862 Seated Half Dollars, but a scroll with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST has been added in the reverse field above the eagle's head. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The otherwise pink-copper surfaces reveal swirls of blue-brown patina over the central and right obverse and the right side of the reverse. Sharply struck with no mentionable surface distractions.

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-327, Pollock-397, High R.6, PR62 ANACS.
The obverse depicts a Union shield pierced by two arrows, a simple wreath rests above. The remainder of the design consists of token-like legends; EXCHANGED FOR U.S. NOTES on the obverse, POSTAL CURRENCY ACT JULY 1862 and 10 CENTS 1863 on the reverse. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. An early attempt to replace the despised fractional currency pieces in circulation; the two cent piece, three cent nickel, and shield nickel were eventually introduced for this purpose. Brilliant and well centered, but limited in grade by both squiggly wire marks and spotty grease stains that were both struck into the obverse at the time of manufacture. Apparently, little care was taken when this pattern piece was produced.
These patterns have been extensively studied and a book has been published about them by David Cassel. As he points out regarding the Judd-327 and 328, there are oddball varieties of metal that were used for alloying that have never been listed, such as iron, silicon, lead, and possibly cobalt and bismuth. This piece would certainly provide ample opportunity for study should the new owner wish to pursue metallurgical testing. (#60486)
