1831 1/2 C Original C-1 or EO-5, B-1, R.6. Die State 1. PR58 NGC. XF45 EAC.
Cataloged as C-1 if it is a business strike, or EO-1 if it is a proof (see the next lot for more details regarding this notation). Small date, large stars; High leaf below right side of S. Only one die state is recorded for the 1831 Original Half Cents. In all states of preservation, and no matter how they were struck, there are slightly fewer than 30 examples known today. When Bowers and Merena sold this coin as part of the Norweb Collection in 1987, it was offered as an important business strike example. Now, NGC has certified it as a Proof. Both business strike (if they exist) and proof 1831 Half Cents are from a single die pair, the obverse die later used for the 1831 Restrike Half Cents, and the reverse used in 1832 for Cohen-1 of that year.
There has been an ongoing debate regarding the status of 1831 Original Half Cents. Are they all business strikes, all Proofs, or are there some of each? This debate took place in the pages of
Penny Wise,
especially in 1996 and 1997. It makes for interesting reading. Ron Manley presented his opinion that they are all Proofs, and he was supported by Frank Wilkinson. Alternatively, Rick Coleman suggested that there are both proofs and business strikes. For the interested reader, we recommend reviewing these articles with an open mind, and then coming to your own conclusion. This cataloger is still considering both sides of the debate, having yet to reach a conclusion.
Sharply struck with olive-brown surfaces accented by lilac, deeply faded from original mint color. The fields are mildly reflective, not deeply so as usual for Proofs. A tiny area of verdigris or corrosion is seen on the obverse, and on the reverse is a small rim bruise over M of AMERICA.
Ex: King Farouk; Norweb Collection (Bowers and Merena, 10/1987), lot 79.
Envelope Included.

(1790) PENNY Albany Church Penny, D Above CHURCH VF35 PCGS.
Breen-1170. One of the great coinage curiosities of the American colonies and the early federal period--ranking right alongside the equally enigmatic Higley coppers--are these communion tokens. Little is known of their origins. Crosby did not include them in his classic book on colonials, but they have become part-and-parcel of the series over the past century or so.
It is not even known if the Albany Church Penny was made for communions, but it is logical to presume so, for such pieces go back at least four centuries in the English series, many of which are extremely rare. Only the Scottish pieces are common, thanks to the fervency of the Scots as well as to their tendency to save everything. Not so the American church pieces. In fact, rarely did our colonial churches use these, as part of the tradition of each church member taking one upon entering the sanctuary on Sunday morning, using it for communion, and then surrendering it upon leaving the ceremony for the day. As Breen says in his
Complete Encyclopedia,
on page 131: they were both tokens and symbols of partaking in the service, and "therefore constituted a kind of proof of membership whose purpose was to prevent hostile outsiders (royal spies, etc.) from attending services and betraying members during the decades when all such unorthodox religious observances were illegal." He speaks of their use in England of the 1630s and slightly later, a period leading up to and during the English Civil War. The practice continued as a tradition for many years thereafter, and occasionally was taken up in the colonies. Certainly, Breen's comment about royal spies remained germane in the early American federal period of the 1790s. The state headquarters of early New York certainly experienced spying. But it has never been proven if this pertained to the Church Pennies of Albany.
Church tokens were actually made for one of two uses: proof of communion, as Br

1793 1C Liberty Cap VF30 PCGS.
S-13, B-20, High R.3. Joseph Wright was born in Bordentown, New Jersey, in July 1756. He settled in London in 1772, returning to the United States in 1782, after making a name for himself as a portraitist. In 1783 he painted a portrait of George and Martha Washington, considered to be his most famous work. Wright also produced dies for the Major Henry Lee medal. In 1793 Mint Director David Rittenhouse appointed Wright to be acting engraver. Wright began working at the Mint in August 1793, but he was only employed for a few short weeks, succumbing in September to the vicious yellow fever epidemic that would go on to claim at least 5,000 lives. However, those short weeks were sufficient for Wright to create a lasting legacy in the minds of coin collectors. After the disastrous introduction of the Flowing Hair, Chain large cents and the marginally improved Wreath cents, Wright designed a device punch for the so-called Liberty Cap cents that is among the most loved and admired in U.S. coinage. He based the design on the Libertas Americana medal of French medalist Augustin Dupré, commemorating the American victories at Saratoga and Yorktown. Wright chose to have the head of Liberty face to the right, but as on the medal she sports the ancient
pileus
or Liberty cap, a symbol of of freedom.
There are six varieties of the 1793 Liberty Cap cents (S-12 through S-16 and NC-6), divided into the Single Leaf and Triple Leaf reverses. On this S-13 Triple Leaf variety, the L in LIBERTY nearly grazes the border beads, and two beads are centered over the I. This piece is on a smooth, glossy, and well-centered planchet that shows the border beads intact on both sides. The piece is largely distraction-free, save for a couple of hairline scrapes on Liberty's hair and a nick on the neck, but overall it is a nice and quite attractive example of the issue. EAC 15.
