First edition, first issue of Wells' first full-length fictional work, with the author mis-identified as "H. S. Wells"
on the title page. Sixteenmo. viii, 216, [2, blank], [6, publisher's advertisements] pages. Frontispiece with tissue guard. Publisher's tan buckram with title and decorations stamped in purple. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Noticeable dust-soiling and staining to boards. Front board slightly bent along a diagonal hairline crack. Mild insect damage to the edges of the front endpapers. Very short marginal tear to the frontispiece. Internally, the text is very clean. Very good.
