1933 $10 MS65 PCGS.
The 1933 eagle had a sizeable mintage of 312,500 pieces. All were struck in January and February 1933, and most pieces were subsequently melted after the Presidential order. Some of those coins--perhaps numbering three or four dozen pieces--were legally released through regular channels at that time. About 30 survivors were uncovered in an East Coast hoard in 1952, and a few others have since turned up in French and Swiss banks. The 1933 eagle, however, is still among the rarest Indian tens in all grades. The new and indispensable Garrett-Guth gold
Encyclopedia
opines that "Owning an example of this date is certainly one of the highlights of any numismatic collection, and a feat precious few collectors can ever hope to accomplish." A total of only 34 Mint State coins have been graded at NGC and PCGS combined. The present MS65 coin is tied with seven other MS65 pieces at PCGS, with no examples finer. At NGC, there are only three Gems certified, and one piece finer (11/06). In terms of technical merit, it holds its own with the Kruthoffer specimen, offered by Heritage at the June 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale, and compares favorably with it in terms of eye appeal. That piece, which sold for $718,750 in the October 2004 Stack's sale, has since been graded MS66 by NGC, which raises the possibility that the present piece is itself conservatively graded.
While Akers states that some 1933 tens have a satiny finish, the three examples in this sale all have decidedly frosted mint luster. This piece has even reddish-gold coloration, and the surfaces are remarkably clean even for a Gem. The striking details are also strong throughout. While there are many notable, rare, and high grade coins in the Kutasi Collection, this 1933 ten dollar will certainly be one of the, if not
the,
most memorable coin in this spectacular group.

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS69 PCGS.
Frank A. Leach was superintendent of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco from 1897 to 1907. He assumed the title of mint director in Washington in 1907 after the resignation of George E. Roberts from the post, and moved there in time to assume his new duties by Oct. 1, 1907. As the following excerpt shows, Leach was a crucial figure in the production of the Saint-Gaudens coinage. Leach wrote his memoirs titled
Recollections of a Newspaper Man--A Record of Life and Events in California,
published in 1917 by Samuel Levinson of San Francisco. Bowers and Merena Galleries republished a portion of that work in 1987 as
Recollections of a Mint Director.
Some excerpts from that text follow, dealing with the circumstances surrounding production of the High Relief issues:
"Another very important matter was in hand in the bureau when I arrived at Washington, which was soon to cause me some anxiety, and that was the perfection of President Roosevelt's scheme for new designs for all the gold coins of our country. There were a number prominent people in the East, especially in New York and Boston, who some time before began an agitation for an improvement in appearance of all our coinage. The President quickly became the leading spirit of the movement. The prevalent idea in this undertaking was that the design and execution of our coinage were inferior and inartistic when compared with those of ancient Greece; and as the coins used by a nation are one of the most enduring records of the art and mechanical skill of its age, our government should make an issue of coinage that would leave to future generations and ages something that would more truthfully and correctly reflect the artistic taste and mechanical ability of our day than the coinage then in use, unchanged for so many years."
Leach then makes a surprising comment concerning what he considers to be the derivative nature of the Saint-Gaudens coinage--at least in thei

1856-O $20 SP63 NGC.
Many specialists believe that this is the single most important New Orleans double eagle in existence. It is also one of the most important coins from this mint regardless of denomination. This 1856-O double eagle is the finest example known by a wide margin. It is also a specimen striking and certified as such by NGC. As an issue, the 1856-O needs little introduction. It remains one of the few transcendent rarities among 19th century U.S. gold, recognized as such even by non-gold collectors.
The original mintage for this issue was a paltry 2,250 pieces, making the 1856-O one of the classic rarities in U.S. gold coinage. It is both the rarest gold coin struck by the New Orleans mint, and the rarest regular issue Liberty Head double eagle. The estimated number of survivors ranges from 10-12 (Breen) to as high as 15-20 (Winter). A mere 3-5 pieces are believed extant in the various AU grades, and this is the only Uncirculated example known.
This coin has an appearance unlike any other 1856-O double eagle. While weakness is generally found on O-mint double eagles from this era, including the 1856-O, this coin shows an amazing full strike in all areas and fully reflective fields, quite unlike the finish seen on other New Orleans twenties from this period. Each star has satiny luster and shows shadowing, as though impressed with an extra blow from the die. Liberty's hair details and the stars above the eagle are equally well brought up. There is a bit of incomplete die polish along the top and bottom sides of the right wing. This is a common occurrence on branch mint proof dollars in the Morgan series, and while it is not entirely similar to a Philadelphia proof from this era, it is obviously a very special coin. Clearly, a great deal of care went into its production. The satiny luster over the devices plus the deeply mirrored fields produces a noticeable cameo contrast on each side. Even casual inspection reveals that this coin was produced differently fr
