While a handful of these stars are known in this grade, all have been closely held for years, with this only the second truly uncirculated example to have been offered at auction for at least the last twenty years. Dr. Cookson's example is a fully embossed crackling fresh piece with superb paper quality which we would unhesitatingly grade gem were the back centering just a little more even. A lovely star which is very close to the full gem grade. This is one of only six New York $5 star specimens reported to date, five of which are uncirculated examples from a single short run, and is certainly as nice as the Oakes collection piece which realized $2935.

There is no shortage of stars known from this district, with the census now well in excess of forty examples, but high grade examples are few and very far between. Less than a handful are listed in the Oakes census, with all coming from one small run. This example, which is new to the census, is bright and well centered, but lacks the embossing and "pizzazz" necessary for the gem grade. This lovely star example from the Cookson collection is listed as About Uncirculated in the Oakes census, but a close inspection shows just a bit of light handling on a bright and fresh example with vivid colors and excellent paper quality. The Philadelphia $5 star that sold in Memphis was, compared to a slabbed Gem 66 counterpart in its description and then inexplicably graded as "Choice Uncirculated-Gem," realized $8050 against a pre-sale estimate of $3500-5000. This example, while clearly not the equal of that note, will likely realize about half that amount.

A very rare star, with the Oakes CU example realizing $8,400. This is one of the six pieces listed in the Oakes census, and is recorded by him as About Uncirculated, which is the grade it last sold at, but we are tending to be a bit more conservative here. It is however, a lovely example, with only light folds, and, without close inspection, the note appears new. While not the rarest district for stars in this denomination, high grade examples are few and far between, with the census showing no hoards or runs of high grade examples. In fact, only one note is listed in Oakes as CU, one grading AU, one grading Extremely Fine, and the remainder dropping off considerably thereafter. The Cookson example, which is not listed in the census, is the sole high grade piece available in recent years. It's a most attractive example, with bright white paper, excellent centering, and but one light fold.
