1849 $5 Mormon Five Dollar--Damaged, Bent--ANACS. XF Details, Net VF20.
K-2, R.5. The first of three Five Dollar issues produced by the Deseret Assay Office in Salt Lake City, the 1849 is a rare coin. While some coins circulated among the Mormons, many that left the Salt Lake Valley were melted. This Territorial is well detailed for the grade, with some rim damage at the base of the obverse and several gouges on the reverse. Still, a desirable example of this rare issue.

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves Below Each Wing, B-6, BB-25, R.3, VF25 PCGS.
Bowers Die State III, the next-to-latest known state for this die combination, and also the most frequently encountered die state. The obverse has been lapped, removing traces of the blundered LIBERTY, and also removing clash marks of the earlier die state. The reverse shows the usual four-leaf cluster beneath the ST of STATES. This is a pleasing silver-gray example that deepens to medium-gray approaching the margins. A few tiny rim nicks are noted on the reverse, but there are no adjustment marks seen on either side.

1870-CC 25C VF Details, Environmental Damage, NCS.
An etched and rough slate-gray representative that exhibits a few moderate handling marks. LIBERTY is bold, and substantial drapery and plumage definition persists. The 1870-CC is a formidable rarity within the Seated Quarter series. Only 8,340 pieces were struck in the first year of production at Carson City; only a slender portion of these coins have survived in any grade.
From The Empire State Collection.

1918/7-D 5C VF25 PCGS.
Although moderately worn, this is an attractive and important Buffalo nickel. There are no evident problems, the surfaces displaying original slate-gray patina that deepens to olive shades in most of the protected areas around the devices. The major design elements are appreciably bold, and the underdigit is readily evident. This coin should have little trouble endearing itself to a circulated Buffalo nickel date collector.

1836 25C B-5, High R.6, VF20 PCGS.
This rare variety shows a diagnostic die crack running from the rim through star 1 and into Liberty's neck, where it joins an equally heavy die crack from the rim through the curl near 6 in the date. B-5 is, by a wide margin, the rarest 1836 die marriage. A rising crack through STATE on the reverse confirms the late die state. This coin is plated in the Rea-Koenings-Haroutunian Census.

1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves VF25 PCGS.
B-5, BB-27, R.1. The thin raised line or 'bar' behind the highest neck curl is a mint-made diagnostic for the familiar Bolender-5 variety. Semi-bright silver-gray surfaces display occasional touches of cobalt-blue and lavender toning, especially around the peripheral areas. The design elements show nice detail, and are well centered on the planchet, and the dentilation is strong on both sides. A few wispy slide marks are noted, particularly on the obverse. Light adjustment marks are visible at the upper reverse border.

O-101a, R.4. O-101a, R.4. One of the more obtainable die pairings for this initial year of Half Dollar production, easily distinguished by the 10-11 berry arrangement on the reverse. Seen here is a later die state of this durable reverse (it was paired with four different 1794 obverses) that has a die crack from a leaf to the final S in STATES. Both sides of this light silver-gray example have traces of album toning at the borders.

1893-S $1 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. VF.
NGC notes old, light cleaning, as evident in a few faint hairlines, but this VF-level 1893-S dollar has begun to retone with a slight tan-gold tinge. No significant marks are seen, and overall eye appeal exceeds that seen on many graded coins at the VF level.

1796 $1 Small Date, Large Letters. B-4, BB-61, R.2. VF25 NGC.
Small, wide date, 96 close, die dot above 1; Berry under first T in STATES. Reiver die state c. Bowers-Borckardt die state II. Medium silver in color and attractive for the grade. The strike is typical, with no weakness aside from a few of the upper right obverse stars. Identifiable by a minor scratch which connects the lower portion of the 96, and another mark which cuts across the lower and outer points of the final star.
On this particular coin, the lump over the 1 in the date is very weak. This may have been partially caused by wear or die lapping. However, we note that the curl between the date and the first star is rather sharp, as is the curl atop Liberty's head while her forehead curl is expectedly lapped and disconnected from her head as usually seen on this variety. Several coins are known which show these curls with more die lapping, and this is apparently not the latest die state of this variety.
