1800 Charleston MECHANIC Slave Hire Badge. Number 183.
A flat octagonal-shaped tag with a hole at the top for suspension, 40mm x 43mm. The "Atmar" hallmark on the reverse at the top denotes manufacture by Ralph Atmar, Jr. He was a goldsmith and engraver whose parents had been banished from Charleston in 1781 by the British because they would not take the loyalty oath. Ralph Atmar, Sr. brought his family back to South Carolina in 1782 and later became a messenger of the state house of representatives. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): an engraved "No 183"; "MECHANIC" in individual punches; and "1800" punched. The condition is fine with some light surface roughness and a dark brown patina. Note that there is no "Charleston" on these first year badges.
Although Charleston had licensing laws and issued badges to hired-out slaves as early as 1764, none of these badges are known to have survived. The law that called the badges offered here into existence was passed in July 1800 to go into effect in mid-August of that year. It mandated that masters who hired slaves out as laborers would have to purchase a badge for the slave to wear with fees dependent upon the occupation. The
City Gazette
of September 3, 1800 announced: "Denomination and Price of said badges are as follows: Huckster, not under thirty years of age, six dollars per badge. Mechanic, three dollars. Porters and cart and dray men, two dollars. Washers, Fishers and Hired Servants, one dollar." There were 2116 badges issued in this first year indicating that more than 20% of the slaves in the city of Charleston participated in this system. The Mechanic is one of the rarer occupations and, according to our research, this particular badge is the third lowest number known for this year making it one of the earliest produced of all Charleston slave hire badges and the cornerstone of any advanced collection.

1806 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge. Number 169.
A slightly convex octagonal-shaped tag with a hole at the top for suspension, 57mm x 61mm. There is a very clear and distinct "C. PRINCE" hallmark punched on the reverse at the bottom, most likely for Charleston silversmith Charles Prince. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "CHARLESTON" in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "No" in a square punch followed by a hand-engraved "169"; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and 1806 bar punched (the very large loop on the "6" makes this look more like "1800" to the naked eye). The condition is extremely fine; all devices are sharp and well struck; patina is dark and even.
A change in the Charleston slave badge law in 1806 specified that all badges would be good for the period of January through December, or a calendar year as opposed to a fiscal year. The mintage for 1806-dated badges is estimated to be only 821 of which only a handful are known to be extant. The scarcity of the date coupled with its choice condition makes this a very desirable example worthy of the finest collections.

Extremely Rare Ives Sojourner Truth Mechanical Clockwork Toy,
4" x 11" x 5", E. R. Ives & Co., Bridgeport, Connecticut, ca. 1880s. An animated Sojourner Truth doll stands behind a podium on a lacquered wood speaker's platform. She is engineered to bend forward, thump the lectern with her right hand, and turn her head while quoting from a stationary book in her left hand. The doll's coal-black face is a garish caricature of the actual reformer, with its wide eyes and red mouth ringed with gleaming white teeth. Reducing the subject to a mere Negro stereotype may not have been entirely unintentional. The doll's original cloth costume consists of a patterned dress with lace collar and beribboned bonnet. The condition of this rare toy is excellent but for a little wear to the velvet that covers the lectern top (where it is struck by her moving hand) and normal aging to garments. The toy's original turning key is not present.
E. R. Ives and Company operated in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from 1872-1932. They are best known for toy trains, but in the early 1880s they produced several moving figures of well-known personalities which are now "Holy Grail" items for collectors of nineteenth century toys. By far the most commonly seen is a walking (or rather lurching) figure of Ben Butler, Civil War general, gadfly politician, and 1884 Greenback / Anti-Monopoly Party candidate for President. Generally considered the most expensive variety depicts Ulysses S. Grant seated in a chair, raising and lowering a cigar. A nice example will run $20,000, if you could find one. Of nearly equal importance is this wonderful mechanical Sojourner Truth. Born a slave in Ulster County, New York, in 1797, she suffered under three hard masters until New York abolished slavery in 1828 and ended up in New York City working as a domestic. She experienced a "spiritual revelation" in 1843 when she adopted the name Sojourner Truth, and began a walking tour of the northeast preaching "God's truth and plan for
