1921 $20 AU58 PCGS.
Double eagle production in 1921 occurred only at the Philadelphia Mint. Just 528,500 coins were struck, all in the final two months of the year. Most of these pieces were never released to the public. The 175 or so 1921 double eagles believed to survive today most likely all came from Mint Cashier in Philadelphia and the residuals of the annual pyx. Writing in
Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles,
numismatic researcher Roger Burdette reveals that no more than 582 coins -- and possibly as few as 332 pieces -- were ever available for distribution to the public. As a result, contemporary collectors and dealers were only able to get a hold of a few pieces at a time, making this issue appear to be a major rarity. It was never as rare as the 1927-D and some other dates that were melted in quantity during the 1930s, but it was scarce from the time of its issuance. Burdette writes, "The 1921 was regarded as the third or fourth rarest date of the series in the 1940s, and it has held that position to the present day."
A number of surviving 1921 double eagles exhibit light wear from circulation, earning various AU grades. While some collectors will strive only for Mint State pieces, attractive AU examples are a popular collecting pursuit for most series students. The present near-Mint example is especially pleasing for the grade, with satiny luster remaining in the peripheral fields and just a hint of wear visible across the high points of the devices. Natural orange-gold color adorns the interiors, leaving brighter yellow-gold hues evident around the borders. Eye appeal is outstanding for the grade.
From The Mackinaw Collection.

1921 $20 MS 62 NGC.
The year 1921 has taken on an aura of mystique that transcends just this series. The 1921-S Buffalo nickel, the 1921 and 1921-D Mercury dimes, and the 1921, 1921-D, and 1921-S Walking Liberty half dollars are some of the more important issues produced this year. Of course, within the confines of the present series, 1921 is also a year that needs little introduction. For it is the year of one of the rarest and most widely pursued Saint-Gaudens double eagles. In the absence of production at both the Denver or San Francisco Mints, the Philadelphia Mint's delivery of 528,500 pieces was all that the avenues of commerce could expect in terms of double eagles this year. The majority of 1921 double eagles simply remained in government hands, only to later be melted as the specter of the Great Depression cast its shadow over gold coins as a circulating medium of exchange. Perhaps half of the extant representatives fall into the circulated grade levels, and both the worn and Mint States survivors are largely repatriations from Europe. An important BU example, this coin displays fulsome satin luster and swirling cartwheel effects. The obverse displays a thin veil of milky patina, but the golden-rose coloration shines forth with undiminished intensity. Despite a few scattered abrasions, the present lot has much to recommend it to the ardent gold collector. Population: 11 in 62, with a mere 6 finer (5/00).

Breen-6843, B. 2-B, Taraszka-25, R.3. An impressive straw-gold example. No relevant marks can be located, even when viewed beneath a loupe, and the eye appeal is substantial. The strike is bold throughout, including on the eagle's breast feathers, which are generally sharp. Slight friction on the cap and drapery denies a Mint State designation. Although the location of the first star relative to the curl is distinctive for Breen 2-B, the variety can also be identified by a series of prominent mint-made spikes within Liberty's cap. At first glance, these appear to be clash marks from the shield on the reverse. However, the width and number of the spikes does not correspond, which indicates further research on their origin is needed.
