1803 1C Small Date, Large Fraction MS64 Brown PCGS.
S-261, High R.2. This variety is distinguished by the 3 imbedded in the drapery and the die crack that begins at the lower obverse rim and continues upward between the 8 and 0 in the date. On the reverse the leaf covers about half of the base of the T in CENT. Both sides are quite well struck, for the type, although very minor weakness shows on some of the reverse peripheral devices, there is a planchet flaw (as struck) near the lower reverse rim, just southeast of the second 0 in 100, and minor die clash marks (as struck) are evident in the obverse fields. The predominant chocolate-brown color is mitigated on each side by cobalt-blue undertones, and there are very few surface disruptions overall.

1814 1C Crosslet 4 MS 64 Brown PCGS.
S-294, R.1. Ex: Eliasberg. A simply stunning Classic large cent, the surfaces exhibit gorgeous orange-tan color with mottled chocolate-brown accents. The planchet is smooth and uncommonly problem-free for the type. A well defined representative that is difficult to surpass in terms of both technical quality and eye appeal.
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 5/96), lot 540, where it realized $9,350.

13 Stars. S-278, R.2. Lovely chestnut-brown surfaces with accents of bluish-steel clinging to the devices. Each side is struck a trifle off-center toward 2 o'clock, not uncommon to this variety, and there is some peripheral weakness in the stars. A most desirable Classic Head cent.

1835 1C Head of 1836--Struck 15% Off Center--MS64 Brown NGC.
N-16, R.2. Struck off-center at 7:30. Fully lustrous olive and dark brown surfaces with a few minor dents and abrasions. A woodgrain toning effect is noted on the reverse with streaks of deep steel color. Large cent errors are highly collectible in any grade, and those in full Mint State preservation are elusive and highly desired by collectors today. EAC 60.

1820 1C Large Date MS64 Red PCGS.
N-13, R.1. This is a lovely example from the famous Randall Hoard of large cents, the source of most high grade large cents dated between 1816 and 1820. The Randall Hoard consisted of several thousand coins, mostly with fresh orange mint luster, although today, few brilliant examples survive. The majority have toned through the years and are now attractive glossy brown or red and brown. Locating a fully brilliant red example, such as the coin offered here, is an extremely difficult task. This example is very sharply struck and has wonderful eye appeal. Population: 10 in 64, 7 finer (6/05).

1812 1C Large Date MS64 Brown NGC.
S-289, R.1. Most easily attributed by the rust pit above Liberty's earlobe and the leaf point midway between S and O on the reverse. While considered a common variety, thus the R.1 rating, this is very likely the finest example known and very uncommon as such. Well struck except on the stars on the left side of the obverse, the surfaces are even brown and glossy with thick, underlying mint luster. The only surface flaw that might aid in tracing the pedigree of this important coin is a tiny, round planchet flaw between star 8 and the denticles. Exceptional quality and rarity.
Ex: RARCOA Sale (4/75), lot 400; unknown intermediaries; RARCOA FPL in Coin World, 2-4/95; Heritage FPL in Coin World, May 22, 1995; ANA Bullet Sale (Heritage, 8/95), lot 1008.

1797 Reverse of '97, Stems MS 64 Brown NGC.
S-135, High R.3. Ex: Dawson. This popular Nichols Hoard variety is distinguished by the upper serif of the B in LIBERTY missing and six berries on each branch of the wreath. This piece has lovely mint luster with medium brown patina that shows faint glimmers of red underneath. The strike is razor sharp on the obverse, with fully defined hair curls and well brought up in most areas on the reverse. An exceptional Draped Bust cent. Population: 3 in 64, none finer (6/98).

1797 Reverse of '97, Stems MS 64 Brown PCGS.
S-135, High R.3. Well struck on the obverse but a bit soft on several of the leaves on the reverse. Light brown over most of the coin lightening to mint red around the devices. An attractive piece from the Nichols Hoard and, while not as well centered as the Montgomery specimen (B&R, 2/76), superior surfaces overall to that coin.

1824 1C MS64 Brown PCGS.
N-2, Early Die State, R.1. The reverse die is rotated about 45 degrees counterclockwise. the obverse is not quite perfectly centered. Minute die rust is visible on Liberty's neck, as is characteristic of the variety. There is no evidence of the obverse die crack that sometimes appears through star 9. The N-2 die combination is the most common of this year, and the logical choice for date collectors seeking a higher grade example. Exceptionally smooth surfaces display medium brown toning with hints of gold undertones. The design elements are sharply defined, except that some of the star centers are weak. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (11/05).

S-295, R.1. A crisply struck mauve-brown near-Gem that has refreshingly unmarked surfaces. Traces of olive patina outline the legends and devices. The sole Plain 4 variety, and the final Sheldon marriage. No Cents are dated 1815, since the War of 1812 interrupted the supply of planchets from Boulton's mint in England. Population: 2 in 64 Brown, none finer (3/04).

1814 1C Plain 4 MS64 Brown NGC.
S-295, R.1. Classic large cents are one of the scarcest types of early copper coins to locate in high grades. As an example, this is one of only two coins certified as MS64 by either of the major services and only two pieces have been certified finer (4/03). This is a reasonably well struck coin that shows some softness over the highpoints on each side. The surfaces show the usual deep, even brown patina that is normally seen on Classic cents. This unspotted near-Gem is also remarkably free from abrasions with the only ones of any note located between ONE and CENT on the reverse.

PCGS 1797 Reverse of '97, Stems MS 64 Brown.
S-135, R.5. A very pleasing, well struck example of this popular Nichols Hoard variety. Formerly sold as lot 1066 (flip included) from The Montgomery Collection (B&R, 2/76) where it was described in part as, "Mint red fading to light brown glossy surfaces. Sharply struck. Well centered. Here is the very definition of a superb early cent! To say more about it would not add to its lustre; it is perfection." We expect spirited bidding on this near-gem Large cent.

1797 1C Reverse of 1797, Stems MS 64 Brown PCGS.
S-135, High R.3. The Philadelphia Mint used planchets of wide ranging quality to produce 897,510 Draped Bust cents in 1797. The best copper blanks arrived in August of this year and were used to produce many of the high grade survivors of S-123 and S-135. In late 1797 or early 1798, Senator Benjamin Goodhue acquired a bag of 1,000 1797 cents for his daughters. These coins were preserved by Goodhue's descendants in the Salem, Massachusetts area until the Civil War. In 1863, David Nichols acquired these coins and distributed them to collectors from his home in Gallows Hill, Massachusetts. Many of the coins in the "Nichols Hoard" were S-135 examples that were struck on high quality planchets from the August, 1797 delivery.
Although it is impossible to say for certain, this coin may owe its survival to Senator Goodhue and his descendants. The planchet is choice, with a smooth, nearly distraction-free texture and pleasing orange-brown color. Hints of original glossiness are also evident as the coin rotates beneath a light. Both the peripheral details and the central devices exhibit impressive striking detail for the series.
From the Bob Bisanz U.S. Type Set.

1803 1C Small Date, Large Fraction MS64 Brown PCGS.
S-258, R.1. This is a rare opportunity for the copper specialist to choose between the two finest known examples of the S-258 variety. This piece has bright, glossy surfaces with variegated medium and darker brown coloration. Very sharply struck on the obverse with just a bit of softness on the leaves on the reverse. We see no obvious abrasions that would aid in tracing the pedigree of this important coin, the only ripple in the fabric of this coin is the variegated color and the diagnostic die crack in the left obverse field.
